Women’s International Cricket – Alyssa Healy’s blistering 170 took Australia to 356 for five as England’s bowlers had no answer to a batting masterclass, while Anya Shrubsole’s third-wicket haul of 46 was the only highlight of the title.

Nat Sciver once again led England’s reply, scoring 148 not out in pursuit of her highest score in international cricket, but it was in vain after Shrubsole was dismissed to give Australia the trophy once again.

But with the introduction of spin in the form of Charlie Dean, Hayley and Rachel Haynes began to find the edge regularly.

England’s fielding lapses, which began against the same opposition in their first group match, resurfaced when Haynes was dismissed for 47 before Kate Cross dismissed Healy for 41 in the same over.

In the semi-final against the West Indies, Haynes’ maiden half-century came off 69 balls, while Healy was dismissed on 62 balls, paving the way for the highest opening partnership in a World Cup final.

And the last wicket of the tournament, Tammy Beaumont misfired to dismiss Haynes for 68 as Haynes ended the World Cup on 497.

The partnership ended after 160, but Healy formed a new partnership with Beth Mooney, who was promoted from five.

But first, Healy became the second woman to score 100 points in a World Cup final and the only player to score 200 points in a World Cup playoff event.

And then she broke the highest score in a women’s World Cup final, going 111 with a quadruple mark in cross country.

More records were broken when Australia posted 260 for one to claim the highest score in a World Cup final with eight overs to spare.

Amy Jones twice sent the umpires upstairs to take her wicket before finally taking it, surprising Healy, who scored an impressive 170 off 138 balls – the highest individual score in a World Cup final for men or women – including more than 100 fours.

A packed Hagley Oval erupted in applause when Healy left Australia at 316 for two before Shrubsole took his second wicket after Ashley Gardner was run out.

The one-dayer did not last long as she scored 10 before Mooney was dismissed on the very next ball after a 47-ball 62.

Young batsman Tahlia McGrath completed a Shrubsole hat-trick as she and Ellis Perry added 25 runs off the last 13 balls to take Australia to 356 for five.

In reply, England’s opening partnership failed once again as Danny Wyatt was bowled by Megan Schutt just four times.

Young Australian pacer Darcy Brown was the target of England’s attack and Beaumont was in the lead until Schutt dismissed him lbw for 27 off 26 balls.

After an unbeaten 109 in the group games, Sciver was again called up to play against Australia and this time her presence gave England a glimmer of hope.

She looked lbw off the bowling of Alan King in front of her partner and captain Heather Knight was similarly dismissed after two balls in the 26th over.

Jones was dismissed for 20 as England slumped to 129 for four before Sophie Dunkley was once again part of England’s rebuild.

But after a partnership of fifty, King dropped her two balls, the leg-spinner pulling the turn to leave her legs on 23 runs.

Brown then went for one as Ecclestone caught McGrath for three runs lbw to Healy himself.

Jess Jonassen took another catch and bowled England, Cross departed for just two runs and the Knights needed 144 with just two wickets remaining.

Sciver, along with Dean, scored another brilliant century with 10 fours and a six off 90 balls.

The pair put on a 65-run partnership before Dean trapped Jonassen at third man in a reverse sweep attempt.

The hero of 2017, Shrubsole was back in action when England beat India in the final as it was the last wicket, with Gardner claiming victory as England were 71 runs short of Sciver’s 148.

I don’t like my green bag sitting in the closet, unused for years

Heat On Hosts To Progress From Difficult World Cup Group

One of my strongest memories of growing up and falling in love with cricket is watching the men’s team play Test matches. We didn’t have women’s cricket on TV in those days, so I wanted to emulate them. Glenn McGrath in particular was a hero of mine. And watching Mike Hussey hit the ‘Amazing Adelaide’ Test winners of 2006 as a kid I will never forget.

An honor attaches to the trials because of the history it provides. As much as I love playing T20 cricket, there is something about the culture of playing with the white red ball that has always captured me, as a fan and now as an Australian player. Having my bagged greens sit in a holder in my cupboard for two years at a time makes it very frustrating. That’s why this week is so important to me as we prepare for our Women’s Ashes Test.

To be honest, it’s a bit intimidating to play in a format that we don’t get to experience at all outside of these isolated games against England. It’s impossible to be as prepared as you’d like, and that’s the last thing you want when you’re trying to pay off a debt of gratitude to so many other players who didn’t get that opportunity. Every Test we play is special and we are excited, but I am sure it should be more than one Test.

This week is all about getting another win and making sure we take the trophy back to Australia. But it’s also an opportunity to prove to decision-makers that we should be given the opportunity to do this not just more frequently, but in a more organized way. I understand and respect the view that T20 cricket is the most accessible format to expand the game with new audiences, but at the cost of rejecting the traditional format almost entirely?

It doesn’t work for me and it doesn’t work in any dressing room. You can ask any Test player and they will say that they want to experience more red-ball multi-day cricket to make it more exciting when we play for our country. Although a draw is enough to retain the Ashes, we will end our contract this week, leaving the ball in search of victory. It’s not in this team’s DNA to play any other way, which is great.

It’s a little disappointing that we’re back on a used pitch this week, but hopefully the rain will help brighten things up a bit.

Obviously we need pitches that help us, which we didn’t get in North Sydney last time. I still don’t know what they were thinking there. The color drained from my face when Alice Healy missed two balls in the first over of this game. From that moment it was already clear that we would not achieve results. It’s a bit of a shame that we’re back on a second-hand pitch this week, but hopefully, like Canterbury four years ago, the rain we’ve had will help brighten things up a bit.

I’m not just talking about complaints, I should add. I have a creative idea to use in Australia. Each summer, the WNCL, our 50 multiplayer tournament, pits six states and the ACT against each other in one game. So if you don’t make it to the Grand Final, it’s only six games
