India Capitals became champions in the first Legends League (LLC) cricket league held in India. The Capitals defeated Bhilwara Kings by 104 runs to lift the trophy in a thrilling final at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium on Wednesday. Gautam Gambhir’s captain Capitals staged a brilliant comeback after stuttering early at 211/7 in 20 overs. Crumbling under the pressure of a lofty target, Kings were all out for 107 in 18.2 overs.

Ross Taylor (82 off 41 balls) and Mitchell Johnson (62 off 35 balls) were the architects of Capitals’ innings as they shared a 126-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but the Kings failed to get any meaningful partnership from their bats.

Kings openers Mon van Wyk (5) and William Porterfield (12) were dismissed in the first four overs. Yusuf Pathan (6) relied heavily on his broad shoulders, but he did not last long. Shane Watson (27) was unlucky to be dismissed while Jessel Kariya (22) showed hope but could not last long.
The chase was well underway when Kings skipper Irfan Pathan (2) was dismissed in the 12th over.
Three bowlers – Pawan Suyal (2/27), Pankaj Singh (2/14) and Praveen Thambe (2/19) – took two wickets each for the Capitals. It was a complete team effort that gave the Capitals the win. Tight pins and a sharp field complemented the good hitting.
But Kings actually had a dream start to the final after winning the toss and electing to field. Irfan’s strategy of starting the rotation from both ends found the Capitals four wickets down in the fifth over.

Monty Panesar and Rahul Sharma cast their web to reduce Capitals to 21/4. But then the counterattack began. Taylor and Johnson took the Kings pitchers by the neck and hit them all over the field.

Irfan Pathan’s captain Bhilwara Kings were restricted to 107 runs in 18.2 overs, losing confidence in their ability to reach the target and losing wickets at regular intervals. Batting first, India Capitals lost four wickets in 21 runs, but Taylor and Johnson’s 126-run partnership for the fifth wicket allowed them to recover.
Captain Gautam Gambhir (9), Dwayne Smith (3), Hamilton Masakadza (1) and Dinesh Ramdin (0) were dismissed cheaply by Rahul Sharma (30-4) and Monty Panesar (13-2).
Taylor gave the Capitals a new lease of life with his second consecutive half-century with four fours and eight sixes off 41 balls. Earlier on October 2, Taylor scored 84 against the same opponent in Jodhpur. Taylor’s fifty was his third in the league. Johnson hit his first fifty in the league. Johnson got out with seven fours and three sixes in 35 balls.

Taylor and Johnson put on a partnership of 126 runs for the fifth wicket. After Johnson’s departure, Taylor and Ashley Nurse worked together again in an important capacity. Meanwhile, Rahul took Taylor’s wicket in an attack by skipper Irfan Pathan. Liam Plunkett (0 bat) was his fourth victim, dismissed by Rahul in his fourth over. However, Nurse took Capitals past 200 with six fours and a six off just 16 balls.
Kings lost the wickets of Mon van Wyk (5), William Porterfield (12) and Yusuf Pathan (6) while scoring 44 runs. Shane Watson provided the resistance and formed a moderate partnership with Jessel Karia (27 runs, 3 fours, 1 six off 19 balls) (22 runs, 17 balls, 3 fours, 1 six). Kings needed 138 runs in the last 10 overs as the fixed rate increased. Watson, who was in the middle order, could have given a chance, but when the score reached 76, Kariya collapsed.
Captain Irfan (2) joined Watson in the middle order but due to a misunderstanding, Watson got out and let the team down. With the score at 81 and Bhilwara Kings’ entire innings finally ending at 107, Irfan joined his teammates in the dugout.
