The 2016 season marks the ninth season for the Indian Premier League (IPL). Established in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it is the most watched domestic Twenty20 league in the world. Comprised of eight franchises in major Indian cities, it features many of the top Twenty cricketers from around the world competing in a 60-match tournament over six and a half weeks. Each team plays against each other twice, before a knock-out period of four games (2 qualifiers, an Eliminator game and the Final).

Last year Mumbai Indians beat the Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs to take home the IPL title. In 2016, the eight IPL teams are the Delhi Daredevils, Gujarat Lions, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rising Pune Supergiants, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad.
