Ireland secured their place in the Super 12 after beating two-time holders West Indies by nine wickets earlier in the day, resulting in their elimination.
Zimbabwe’s victory dropped Ireland to second place and Andrew Balbirnie’s side will now progress to the Super 12 group in England, where the sides meet at the MCG next Wednesday.

Scotland lost two wickets in the powerplay, including Matthew Cross (1) to Wesley Madhavere’s superb catch at midwicket by Richard Nagarava (2-28).
Top scorer George Munsey (54 off 51) – his ninth fifty in T20 Internationals – shared 40 and 36 runs with Berrington (13) and Callum McLeod (25) respectively but the runs were neither quick nor fluent.
Tendai Chatara (2-14) was the pick of Zimbabwe’s attack, while his teammates Ngarawa and Raza (1-20) also impressed.
Regis Chakabwa (4) and Madhevere (0) were unimpressed with the bat, although within two wings Chakabwa was out lbw to Broad Wheel and Madhevere pulled Josh Davey on his stumps.

Erwin powered his side by scoring 35 off Sean Williams (7), before the captain and Raza added 64 off 43 balls in the fourth over.

It didn’t bother me then that almost all of the team was white. So is Australia, after all, and so are New Zealand and South Africa. I didn’t know then that less than 2% of the people in Zimbabwe are white. I didn’t know the political views of the people playing for the national team or the inherent inequality, meaning that those white players didn’t join the national team of the same force. At that time I had a little problem: the best players were selected to play for Zimbabwe.
It explains why, at the 1992 World Cup, Zimbabwe had fewer black players than England and fewer colored players than New Zealand. That explains why one family of Salisbury, the Flowers, has produced many established international cricketers and about 99% of the population since the turn of the century. Suddenly it didn’t happen.
Most of the Zimbabwe cricket team was coming. Experts estimate that white Zimbabweans own more than 70% of the country’s most developed agricultural land. In what was then known as the breadbasket of Africa, that always led to deep wealth inequality. In the late 1990s, when Tony Blair, the UK Prime Minister at the time, stopped British subsidies for land reform in Zimbabwe, this led to the expropriation of land from white farmers. The reforms were political, dirty and violent. Concerns have arisen among Zimbabwean cricketers, many of whom have grown up in farms that have suddenly experienced this new uncertain time. As the cricket team begins to dip its toes in the waters of change, the process accelerates at breakneck speed.
It would be unfair to say that Zimbabwe in the 1990s did nothing to promote cricket in areas where economic pressures might have put it out of the question. Since the country gained independence from Britain in 1980, investment has flowed into poorer cities and schools, and scholarship programs have helped the likes of Vusi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu and Hamilton Masakadza. But the replacement goals were pushed so hard that they all came to a head in 2004, and when a heat streak resulted in 15 players hitting, the national team was little more than an empty shell.

These results and my concern for them more than anything else in Zimbabwe make my love for the pre-2004 Zimbabwe team feel like a guilty pleasure. I have never been to Zimbabwe, let alone lived there. I am very aware of the poverty faced by most of the country’s citizens due to political instability and the horrors of farmers who have been dispossessed of their land. Just this week, the United Nations warned that the nation is on the brink of a man-made drought.
Yet even as I read those headlines, I could only wonder if Douglas Marillier, Grant Flower, Sean Erwin and the like would play again for Zimbabwe and what that would mean for cricket’s long-term crisis. Am I interested in the extent to which the situation affected the cricket team I felt was defensive?
