President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday inaugurated the world’s largest cricket stadium, the renovated Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, a state-of-the-art facility that can accommodate an impressive 1.32 lakh spectators.

The President inaugurated the stadium in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju among other dignitaries. It begins with the third Test between India and England in an afternoon game on Wednesday and will also conclude with the fourth and final match of the series on March 4.
The stadium, which was earlier named after the first Deputy Prime Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has been renamed after the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will henceforth be called the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Spread over an area of 63 acres, the stadium was built at a cost of Rs 800 crore and with a seating capacity of 1,32,000, it surpassed the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground which can accommodate 90,000 people.
“The total area is equivalent to 32 Olympic-sized football fields combined,” the press information bureau said in a statement, giving details of the massive structure.

The facility, which was closed for renovations in 2015, witnessed several milestones in Indian cricket in its previous avatar.
These included Sunil Gavaskar, who reached the 10,000-run mark against Pakistan in 1987, and Kapil Dev’s 432nd.
The architect of the new stadium is the Australian architecture firm Populous, which designed the Melbourne Cricket Stadium.
It has 11 pitches made of both red and black clay and is the only stadium in the world to have the same ground surfaces for the main and practice pitches.

“As children, we dreamed of the world’s biggest stadium in India. And now as the sports minister, my happiness knows no bounds that this has finally happened,” Rijiju said at the inauguration.
The players of the Indian and English national teams, who were training here in the last few days, expressed their admiration for what happened in the arena.
The floor claims to have a drainage system that only takes 30 minutes after the rain stops to drain the water.
Instead of high-mast floodlights, the pitch has LED lights fixed along the perimeter of the roof, providing shadow-free light, a first of its kind in India.

It is the only cricket stadium in the world to have four dressing rooms for players to play back-to-back matches on the same day.
It also has a cricket academy, indoor stadiums and two separate practice areas with small pavilion areas.
The President performed the ground-breaking ceremony of the sports complex at the stadium for sports such as football, hockey, basketball, kabaddi, boxing and lawn tennis.

“Ahmedabad is completely sold out, the day-night Test match being the first match there in a long time,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said.
“We want to see every seat filled. And that’s what it is, the tickets are gone and so are the T20s (which follow the Tests).
