The President inaugurated the stadium in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju among other dignitaries. It begins with the third Test between India and England in an afternoon game on Wednesday and will also conclude with the fourth and final match of the series on March 4.

The stadium, which was earlier named after the first Deputy Prime Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has been renamed after the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will henceforth be called the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Spread over an area of ​​63 acres, the stadium was built at a cost of Rs 800 crore and with a seating capacity of 1,32,000, it surpassed the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground which can accommodate 90,000 people.

“The total area is equivalent to 32 Olympic-sized football fields combined,” the press information bureau said in a statement, giving details of the massive structure.
