In a major move two days before IPL 2022, MS Dhoni has stepped down as Chennai Super Kings captain and handed over the leadership to Ravindra Jadeja. The left-hander will lead CSK’s defending champions in their season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday.

“MS Dhoni has decided to relinquish the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and has selected Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,” CSK’s official statement said .
Dhoni has led CSK since the first IPL season in 2008. He is the second most successful IPL captain who has led CSK to four titles, just one behind Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma. With Dhoni at the helm, CSK became the most successful IPL franchise of all time, failing to qualify for the playoffs just once in the tournament’s 15-year history.
This may also mean that Dhoni will not be able to play all the matches for CSK this season and it could be the last time we see him in the IPL. As for Jadeja, the all-rounder has a tough challenge ahead as he hasn’t had much experience in leading the team. The last time Jadeja captained in any form was way back in 2007 when he led Saurashtra against Jharkhand in the Vinoo Mankad Under-19 tournament.
Jadeja is only the third player to captain CSK after Dhoni and Suresh Raina. Jadeja, who joined CSK in 2012, scored 1324 runs and took 90 wickets for CSK in eight seasons. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed that Dhoni made the move on Thursday and had been thinking about it for some time. Viswanathan said Dhoni wants a seamless transition and feels this is the right time to pass the torch to Jadeja.

“MS Dhoni thought about it. He felt it was the right time to give Jaddu [Jadej] the captain’s armband. He thinks Jaddu is at the peak of his career and it is the right time to lead CSK. What will be good for the franchise has to be [in ] in the back of his mind,” Viswanathan told ESPNCricinfo.
After finishing as runners-up in the first round of the IPL, Dhoni led CSK to their first IPL title in 2010 when they defeated Mumbai Indians in the final. The following year, they became the only team to win the IPL trophy two years in a row, a feat they did until 2020, when MI finished twice.
Dhoni guided CSK to their third IPL win in 2018, which will likely go down as their most memorable. CSK were returning to the IPL after a two-year ban and captain Dhoni was at his best once again, leading his troops to second place in the points table. In the final, CSK beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets to complete one of the biggest and most memorable comeback stories in all of sports.
This will be the second time since 2017 that Dhoni has played as a pure bowler and wicketkeeper in the IPL. Five years ago, Dhoni was replaced as captain of Rising Pune Supergiant by Steve Smith mid-season. They finished as runners-up losing to MI by one run in the final. Under Dhoni, CSK played 204 IPL matches, winning 121.
