Faf du Plessis is South Africa’s new flag on their way to a major trophy. Hans Cronje, Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers led the Proteas admirably in the multi-team tournament, but none of the trio could take South Africa out of the last four stages of the World Cup or Champions Trophy. Captain du Plessis will enter the tournament on the back of a confidence boost in the home series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while his prowess against spin bowling makes him vital to his side’s cause.

Hashim Amla has been a consistent batsman in Test and ODI formats for the past decade, but his form has dipped in the last year and a half. His ability to read the conditions perfectly helped him in more than 3000 ODI runs both at home and away. Ahead of the World Cup, Amla was dropped for the first three ODIs of the five-match home series against Sri Lanka, putting his place in South Africa’s World Cup squad in doubt, with his replacement Reza Hendricks having a good record l. However, Amla has managed to strike and will be a key player in what could be his last World Cup.

In 2013, when he was still fresh at the international level, de Kock scored three consecutive ODI centuries against India at home, putting him in the elite company of AB de Villiers, Saeed Anwar, Zaheer Abbas, Ross Taylor and Herchelle Gibbs. Only batsmen have achieved the feat before. Opening the bat for South Africa in ODI and T20 cricket, de Kock often helps his team assert their authority over the opposition with explosive starts. His average in the high 40s also proves his consistency as he continues to be an integral part of South Africa across formats.

JP Duminy made his ODI debut in South Africa in 2004, but his century (166) and unbeaten half-century on the first Test in Australia, when the Proteas managed 414, remain the highlights of his career. Duminy offered versatility with his off-spin, while he floated as usual in what was often a high-quality batting range. Dumin has not been as consistent with the bat as his talent suggests, but remains a key member of the Faf du Plessis-led side.

Aiden Markram captained South Africa in the U19 World Cup winning team in 2014 and made his international debut in 2017. The 24-year-old has shown that he belongs at this level, but his 50th appearance. The format was sporadic – he scored only two half-centuries in 18 innings. But with AB de Villiers hanging up his boots in 2018 and Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis in the twilight of their careers, Markram will soon become South Africa’s batsman.

Ipl Blessed Sa20 Has Come At The Right Time For South African Cricket

David Miller is the type of team batsmen like to play at No. 5 and No. 6 – where batsmen often have to play big shots in front of the ball. A pure striker of the ball who can clear boundaries at will, Miller thrives when given a platform. Miller made his ODI debut in 2010, but did not get a place in the playing XI until 2013. That year, the 2013 Champions Trophy was his first major tournament, and his first ODI century in 2015. Miller went on to phase where he had poor scoring numbers, but his batting average (around 40) suggests he is good enough in a high-pressure role.

A muscular fast bowler who thrives on deck, Ngidi impressed on his Test debut against India as he took nine wickets in his first four Tests, including a match-defining six for 39 in the second innings at SuperSport Park. The whites’ good performance in the Test earned Ngidi a call-up to the ODI squad. Injury hampered him in the second half of 2018, but his performances earlier in the year and the promise he showed were enough to secure a place in the Proteas’ 2019 World Cup squad.

Chris Morris made his debut for South Africa (first in the T20 format) in 2012 and his skill set suggests he could be a key member in all three formats. With the ball he could bowl at a speed north of 140 kmph and his batting technique always gave him the opportunity to contribute more than one. Despite this, Morris played only 34 ODIs over six years, while his participation in the T20I team was also sporadic. Morris won a place in the South African squad after Henrich Northey failed to recover from a broken thumb.

All South Africa Cricket Teams Set To Have Minimum 7 Players Of Color By 2023?

In January 2019, Andile Phehlukuao, a relative newcomer to the team, showed his prowess with the bat with an unbeaten 69 against Pakistan. Chasing 204 for five in South Africa, Phehlukwayo along with Rasi van der Dusen and his crucial knock led the Proteas to a five-wicket win. This innings, in which he also took four wickets to help South Africa bowl out the visitors for 203, was a testament to his knowledge with the bat. He has been expensive with the ball, as his ODI economy rate (5.62) suggests, but with multiple variations, he can take wickets on any playing surface. He is the number 8 that the captain wants to have in the squad.
