Six teams in the inaugural South African T20 League are owned by the French owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
While the CSA T20 League is expected to clash with another T20 marquee league in the UAE in January-February 2023, the CSA has already secured the support of many international T20 stars.
According to Cricket South Africa’s statement on 11 August 2022: “Over 30 marquee international players have already been signed by the league, with the number increasing as players enter the auction which takes place over the next few weeks. This is from except for all contracted Proteas and homegrown players committed to the league.”

Cricket: All Six Teams In South Africa’s Upcoming T20 League Bought By Ipl Franchise Owners
Four IPL franchises – Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals – and a consortium led by Kevin Pietersen have expressed interest in buying franchises in South Africa’s new T20 tournament. The competition, scheduled for January next year, will see six privately owned teams play each other home and away in a 30-match group stage before the qualifiers. The Global T20 League (GLT20) in 2017 and the now-defunct Mzansi Super League (MSL), which was played in 2018 and 2019. According to a document shared at a special meeting of the Cricket Association of South Africa (CSA), the CSA is with the aim of creating a “second best World T20 League” after IPL. The document admits that only the IPL has enjoyed “tremendous success” and that there is a “clear gulf” between the Indian T20 league and the others, forcing the CSA to focus on the second best T20 league.
