Sri Lanka Cricket is investigating “various incidents” at the T20 World Cup after Dushushka Gunathilaka was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney last week.

Gunathilaka was arrested early Sunday morning at the Sri Lankan team hotel and charged with four counts of incestuous relations following a police investigation.

The 31-year-old, who played eight Tests, 47 ODIs and 46 T20s, is currently in custody in Australia after being denied bail twice. Sri Lanka Cricket banned Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket and the rest of the team went home without him.
The governing body has now announced the formation of a three-man commission to investigate the incident and other incidents during Sri Lanka’s tenure in Australia.
Sri Lanka Cricket has not released details of the incidents it is looking into, but Queensland’s Courier Mail says the investigation will involve another member of the team involved in an altercation at a casino in Brisbane.
According to the Courier Mail, Sri Lankan media reported that he was involved in a fight with a group of men at a casino ahead of the Super 12 World Cup against Afghanistan at the Gabba on November 1.

The statement read: “Sri Lanka Cricket seeks the appointment of a three-member inquiry team consisting of Justice Sisira Ratnayake (Retired Supreme Court Judge), Mr. Niroshana Perera (Advocate) and Mr. Asela Rekawa (Advocate). lawyer) to initiate an investigation into the alleged incident involving player Danushka Gunathilaka.
“Also, the committee will focus its investigation on the various incidents that have come to the notice of Sri Lanka Cricket and occurred during our national team’s stay in Australia.
“The team will at this stage request an immediate explanation from the team leader about his conduct in relation to the occurrence of such incidents,” he said. “The Executive Committee will issue strict disciplinary action against players and/or officials in the event of proven misconduct or negligence in the performance of their official duties.”
Gunathilaka played just one game at the World Cup – a qualifying loss to Namibia – but a torn left hamstring ruled him out of the rest of the tournament, though he remained in the squad. Sri Lanka crashed out of the Super 12s stage after losing their last match against England at the SCG over the weekend.

Sri Lanka Cricket will reportedly pay Gunathilaka’s legal costs after he was denied bail and taken into custody. His lawyer, Anand Amaranath, told Cricinfo ESPN that he was expecting a refund from Gunathilak at a later date – which is basically a loan.
Gunathilaka could be jailed for more than a year if further bail appeals fail. Sri Lanka started a spontaneous celebration when they won the Asia Cup for the sixth time in the shortest form of cricket in Dubai.

Government official Pratana Weerasinghe said Sunday’s cricket victory came hours after Sri Lanka won the Asian Women’s Netball Cup in Singapore.
“It’s a very proud day! Girls used to do it and now boys do it. Wow, what else? It’s the happiest day in many years,” Weerasingh told AFP.

Hemalatha Tillakaratne, 72, said she feared the government would raise prices as she was benefiting from rare sporting victories in the country.
