Csk And Other Ipl Franchises Buy All 6 Teams Of South Africa’s Upcoming T20 League
Four IPL franchises – Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals – and a consortium led by Kevin Pietersen have expressed interest in acquiring franchisees in South Africa’s new T20 tournament. The competition, scheduled for January next year, will feature six individual teams, who will play each other home and away in a 30-game group stage before the playoffs. This is CSA’s third attempt to launch a T20 competition, following the failed Global League T20 (GLT20) in 2017 and the now-defunct Mzansi Super League (MSL) which was played in 2018 and 2019. According to a document shared at a special meeting in 2017 by the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Membership Council, the CSA aims to create the “second best T20 league in the world” after the IPL. The document acknowledges that only the IPL has achieved “fleeting success” and that there is a “clear gap” between the Indian T20 league and the rest, leaving the CSA with no option but to focus on making the T20 tournament second best. To that end, it has brought in one person who knows how to succeed in the league better than most: Sundar Raman, the former chief operating officer (COO) of the IPL, has taken a minority stake in the bid. The document states that Raman holds a 12.5% stake in the yet-to-be-named tournament, with CSA retaining the majority (57.5%) and broadcaster SuperSport owning the remaining 30%. CSA estimates the league will cost it $56 million over 10 years and earn $30 million over the same period. But it will also come with SuperSport’s commitment to pay $89 million, which will allow the CSA and the franchise to profit – split 50-50 – for the first decade. The document says the league will be a “financially viable project for CSA from Day 1,” making it different from the other two attempts. The GLT20, which was abandoned for reasons such as the lack of a broadcast partner, cost more than R300m ($19.1m) and the two MSL events aired on public broadcaster SABC for a paltry R25m ($1.6m) , cost more than R200 million ($12.7 million). Both significantly reduced CSA reserves, which some believe are at such low levels that the game in South Africa may be seriously curtailed in the near future. With these concerns in mind, the CSA has chosen to dip its toes back in. in the T20 market, noting that “the success of the IPL has changed the face and finances of BCCI” and hopes that something similar can happen with CSA. As a result, it has ruled out any “experiments” such as playing in a T10 or 100-ball format, aiming for “100 best and available players” with around half from South Africa. The CSA aims for the tournament to have “redefined the landscape and economy of cricket in South Africa” by 2033, and plans to have each franchise pay 20% of its revenue to the CSA by the 11th year of the tournament. South Africa is also hosting the tournament’s three ICC events over the next five years, which will not only boost the country’s profile as a major tournament host, but also bring in much-needed revenue. They will co-host the Women’s Under-19 World Cup in January 2023, followed by the Women’s T20 World Cup in February and the Men’s ODI World Cup in 2027, along with Namibia and Zimbabwe. An informal auction for the South African T20 League has already taken place. CSK, MI and RR among some other IPL franchises have bought all six teams in the league.
The Indian Premier League has grown rapidly over the past decade and a half. Be it financially or cricket wise, the Indian T20 league has been a success. BCCI and the owners of the participating franchises like CSK, MI etc have made huge profits due to the crowd and publicity of the match draw.
Due to this, IPL has already spread its wings across the global T20 league market. Red Chillies Entertainment – KKR’s ownership company – was the first IPL banner to buy a franchise in a T20 league other than the IPL. They bought CPL Trinbago Knight Riders in 2016.
More recently, RR & PBKS also owned one team each in the Caribbean Premier League, while DC and Kolkata have acquired the franchise rights for the UAE T20 League.
