India is all set to become the first country to play 1000 One Day Internationals. They will reach this milestone when the Rohit Sharma-led side take on the West Indies at the Narendra Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Australia bowled out 958 and Pakistan 936. India won 518, lost 431, drew 9 and participated in 41 not out. He played in 66 stadiums in the world (28 in India) and a record 72 games in Sharjah.

Highlights of India’s ODI achievements include winning the World Cup in 1983 and 2011 and the Champions Trophy in Australia in 1985.

Spoke to the legendary trio of Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan as they shared their thoughts on one-day cricket.

Obviously, one-day cricket has come a long way since the popularity of Packer’s day-night series. Despite the Twenty20 revolution, the ICC World Cup has created a very strong affiliation. The bilateral series remains (ODI cricket) but there is increasing interest in the World Cup. I’m the good one. Cricket can only be a sport where you have three different formats and each of them has a challenge, but the story has survived for so long, and I’m sure it will continue, despite the progress of Twenty20.

I am done with the ICC (as chairman of the cricket committee). But in the nine years I have been at the ICC, the main discussion has been to play meaningful cricket or to give meaning and relevance to every international match. I think it’s critical to the discussion and I’m very glad that now every game counts. If it is a five-match ODI series or a three-match series and if the team wins the first three or two matches, the following matches also count. For both Test and ODI cricket, it’s great that every match now counts regardless of the score.

For me, it took a little while to adjust from Test cricket to ODI cricket. The mindset of spinners needs to change. The wicket-taking mindset is always there for me, whether I’m playing Tests or the white ball. My attitude or basic approach to the game has never changed, but me in terms of understanding length and line is different and cue ball practice is an important aspect. Also, practice for ODI cricket. These adjustments should be made in these aspects. I play in different phases of games and under different rules and restrictions on the field. I bowled even in death. I would say that when I first started playing cricket, one-day cricket revived Indian fast bowling because you have to have three fast bowlers to play. Test cricket doesn’t give India’s third-stringer much of a chance; forget about the third, and even the second sometimes. But I think it (ODI) kept me in the game and so I owe a lot to the ODI format

I think apart from Test cricket, one-day cricket – if you look at its gradual development – has been the mainstay over the years. The World Cup saw some fantastic matches. And then you have to wait six hours, and if the game comes down to the wire, I think that’s exactly what people want. I think they need it. It provides such good entertainment that they want to stay. I will always cherish the ODI World Cup more than anything else. There is a chance for the team in the ODI format to make a comeback. It’s not just about one or two shots, you have the opportunity to build and take your game to the next level. Take the game the way you want.

I played at a time when one-day cricket was changing rapidly. I probably played 25 ODIs before I played my first Test. I got a record in Zimbabwe and then I played a Test. Well, because of one-day cricket, the game starts faster; the rules kept changing. The number of 1000 ODIs only reflects the popularity of the game in India.

India can get a lot of people. It doesn’t matter which team is the opposition. This helped me make my debut for India in one-day cricket. I grew up in an era where you wanted to play Test cricket and I play a lot of ODI cricket, things move quickly. But ODI cricket settled my heart first. It grew exponentially when I started playing for India. Playing a lot of ODIs means I get more international cricket. Since Tests are the pinnacle of the sport, you have to compete in ODIs that get tougher as they progress.

Different strokes were played and Adam Gilchrist came out to open and beat us in the ODI in Kochi. And with guys like Sanath Jaiasuriia, Romesh Kauvitharana and Gilchrist, you see scores of 270 and 280, not 230 or 240. Then every batsman starts hitting the ball harder. Teams that had one or two hitters started to have five or six. The bowlers need to be better while the batsmen play balls and shots from the circle. The drummers often played down the track and kept turning. Being a bowler brings greater challenges. The field has become flat, has a smaller field and a fast field. I played with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, when he started he could smash the ball. He is a powerful player. One can see the strength and consistency from Dhoni, Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), (Matthew) Hayden, Gilchrist. You talk about great players.

If you don’t have to do it in five days, you should do it in less time if you can’t get rid of a game that needs to be shipped quickly. In my time, six runs in the last over could tie the game; now the match is definitely not there. And now with Twenty20 anything can be chased. If you don’t get (the bowling), you know what’s coming.

I think the 2003 Indian team was balanced. It covers most of the basics. We have Sachin, Vir (Virender Sehwag), (Sourav) Ganguly, Yuvraj, a group of good seamers, two excellent spinners in Kumble and Harbhajan (Singh). Rahul (Dravid) keeps the wicket gives another option. If anyone is missing, maybe someone like MS Dhoni.
