Former Indian cricketer and current member of parliament Navjot Sidhu speaks to the press • 05 Aug 2010 • AFP In 1996, Navjot Singh Sidhu caused a storm by abandoning India’s cricket tour of England and flying home after a fight with its captain Mohammad Azharuddin.
A former cricket board official wrote in a recent memoir that Mr Sidhu, then one of India’s leading players, was apparently offended by some swear words his captain used in “good humour”.
Two years later, Mr Sidhu allegedly punched a 65-year-old man during a parking dispute in Patiala, Punjab. The man later died in hospital. In 2006, the court found him guilty of murder. He appealed and in 2018 the Supreme Court sentenced him to a small fine for causing bodily harm but acquitted him of murder.
A flamboyant and outspoken personality, the 57-year-old Sidhu has always attracted attention and controversy. Earlier this week, he caused political confusion with his latest avatar as head of the Congress Party in Punjab, one of the three states where India’s main opposition party is in power.
Today In History: On This Day An Unwanted Record Was Registered In The Name Of Navjot Singh Sidhu, So Sachin Tendulkar Had Created History:
Just three months after he was elected to lead the party, and days after the departure of his arch-rival and former chief minister, Captain Amrinder Singh, a brave ex-soldier and seasoned politician, Mr Sidhu resigned this week.
He clearly regretted the “inappropriate” appointment in the government of new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Mr. Sidhu’s action made the party leadership blush and sparked a meme. “I am ready to sacrifice anything, but I will stick to my principles. I don’t aspire to any position,” he said after leaving.
Mr. Sidhu’s critics disagree. After 17 years in politics – first in the Hindu nationalist BJP and now in the Congress – he is said to remain an “impulsive and selfish” politician. “He is a very extraordinary politician. He is not very experienced, speaks out of turn, does not work in a team, does not weigh words and manners,” said political scientist Ashutosh Kumar.
Mr. Sidhu’s friends describe him as an intelligent man who has had several successful careers. He has been an international cricketer, a television commentator, a regular guest on India’s biggest comedy shows and a judge for others, and a contestant on reality shows.

An advocate of peace, he counts Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan among his friends. “My friend Imran Khan made my life successful. He separated politics from religion,” he once said.
Mr. Sidhu’s cricket, experts say, reflects his versatility. He is a powerful batsman and a dashing striker. (He played in 51 Test matches for India between 1983 and 1999, averaging 42.13 points.) “To improve his performance, he never went to parties, movies, or any other bad habits,” a news magazine once wrote, listing his “lesser known” qualities. Mr. Sidhu is also very religious and a vegetarian.
During his second career as a commentator, the energetic Mr. Sidhu gained a cult following with his local one-liners, “ruining the spoken word with a uniquely entertaining mix of jumbled metaphors and twisted clichés,” as writer Amit Varma described it. Let’s take some examples of “siddhuism”, such as his famous sayings: “Everything positive is better than anything negative” and “A vain thought is the place where evil hatches its eggs.”
This was followed by a career as a flamboyantly dressed guest on a laugh-out-loud comedy show, where he sported a colorful turban and matching suit. In 2019, he was fired from the show for his comments after a suicide bombing in Indian-administered Kashmir killed more than 40 Indian soldiers. Mr Sidhu’s statement that it was futile to blame Pakistan for the reckless actions of “a few” was seen as unpatriotic and was widely criticized.
Not Worried At All’: Navjot Singh Sidhu Is Unfazed About Special Remission Status, Says His Advocate
Ayaz Memon, a cricket writer, says that Sidhu turned to politics, “using his popularity as a player and commentator to gain favorable results as a vote-getter.” He had a keen sense of the zeitgeist and captivated the crowd with his colorful eloquence.
In 2004 he joined BJP and won from Amritsar in Punjab. In 2016, he resigned after the party denied him a ticket. The following year, before the state elections, he joined the Congress. “He is very ambitious and seems to have miscalculated with his latest resignation,” said Rahul Verma, of the Center for Policy Studies in Delhi.
Just five months away from the state elections, Sidhu is positioning himself as a principled politician who wants to “save” Punjab. The northern states are in a state of fermentation. Farmers are protesting the planned market reform. The ongoing effects of the desecration of Sikh scriptures in 2015 continue to worry local residents. Addiction is high. There is deep corruption with politically connected cartels running profitable businesses.
Mr. Sidhu himself remains untainted by the allegations. “If I have to clean the dirt, then I have to stay in the dirt,” was one of his signature quips. But the recent actions of the child of Indian politics have embarrassed his already beleaguered party – his critics say he remains unhappy that he was not appointed chief minister. “Mr Sidhu is in a hurry,” said Ashutosh Kumar. “He must learn to be patient and have fewer rights.” Home » Cricket
