The 5 times IPL champions and the most successful franchise in the history of the IPL, Mumbai Indians retained just 15 players ahead of the 2023 IPL auction. Unlike their previous thought process where they gave a long term to their players , this year was an exception.

Soon after the 2022 mega auction in which they invested in many players, a tenth-place finish in the points standings led the team to take drastic measures. They released up to 13 players from their squad and most of the releases were for young players which weren’t too expensive either.
But the main highlight of their preservation was Kieron Pollard. Lui proactively retired ahead of IPL 2023 and then was announced as the batting coach for Team MI. The 35-year-old began his IPL career at MI in 2010 and is one of the few players to have played for just one franchise.
Besides him, MI retained a total of 16 players. This includes 3 batsmen, 2 wicketkeepers, 7 all-rounders, 1 spinner and 3 pacers. Analyzing the overall roster, Mumbai Indians are lacking in most of the areas. They need 1-2 good foreign pacers, they need a good Indian/foreign spinner and they also need 2-3 good Indian batsmen. They have a lot of handymen, but most of them seem inexperienced. With INR 20.55 crore open, hopefully they are able to fill some of the gaps.
As for the released players, the Mumbai Indians have released their two top spinners, Mayank Markande and Murugan Ashwin. From the point of view of foreign players, MI has released all its pacers, Daniel Sams, Tymal Mills and Riley Meridith. Also, they have released young guns like Aryan Juyal, Anmolpreet Singh, Rahul Buddhi and Sanjay Yadav.

Talking about possible current best 11 based on retained players, MI has a solid top 6. Rohit and Kishan will open with aggressive Dewald Brevis at No. 3. This will be followed by world No. 1 T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav at 4, Tilak Varma at 5 and Tim David at 6.

While the stick is good, the all-rounder is one area where IM lacks good options. Hrithik Shokeen and Jofra Archer look like the only decent options. Their bowling seems to center around Archer and Bumrah with decent support from Behrendorff and Kartikeya.

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians are set to embark on a new path in the upcoming 2023 IPL season if their retention list at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is complied with on Tuesday 23 November). As with the previous season, 2022 also sees the core evolve as they will continue to strengthen and build the squad for the future, the Mumbai Indians said in a statement.

MI named skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and batsman Suryakumar Yadav as the ‘core group’ of the team. “MI Core – Captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah & Suryakumar Yadav continues with Mumbai Indians and was also held up ahead of mega auction in 2021. Legend of Mumbai Indians, global cricket icon and one of the best in the game, Kieron Pollard has decided to retire from IPL cricket and will take up the role of batting coach of the Mumbai Indians,” MI said in a statement.
Wicketkeeper batsman Ishan Kishan and after a great successful season, young debutants Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, Kumar Kartikeya Singh and Tristan Stubbs, will be an important cog in the team’s strategy for next season.
MI are hoping England pacemaker Jofra Archer recovers from his injury and is fit enough to partner Jasprit Bumrah next season. “The overseas contingent of Jofra Archer and Tim David continues and is joined by recently traded fast bowler Jason Behrendorff,” the statement added. The 2023 season will also see the debuts of Mark Boucher as head coach of Mumbai Indians and Kieron Pollard as batting coach.
