Rinku Singh once again finished brilliantly for Kolkata Knight Riders as they beat Punjab Kings by five wickets on Monday to keep their IPL playoff hopes alive. KKR skipper Nitish Rana’s half-century and Andre Russell’s big leap at the death in pursuit of 180 enabled Rinku to end the match with a 10-ball-21 not out.

Earlier, Varun Chakaravarthy led his bowling department brilliantly to take 3/26 as KKR put up a neat bowling display to restrict PBKS to a sub-par 179 for seven after the visitors opted to bat on a slow wicket. In reply, Rana’s brilliant effort put KKR on display as they rose to no. 3 and laid the foundation with the ball 38-51 (6×4, 1×6).
Needing 56 off 28 balls after Rana became Rahul Chahar’s second victim, Russell went ballistic against Sam Curran and smoked him for three sixes in four balls in the 20th over to swing the equation in KKR’s favour, they need six from the last one.
But the death over specialist Arshdeep Singh, who had a six to defend, went down the wire with four off the first four balls. There was more drama when Russell was run out in the penultimate ball, as the calm Rinku Singh (21 not out; 10b) again came to KKR’s rescue to seal victory with the last ball.
KKR’s win added to the ebb and flow in the fight for at least four qualifying spots. They are the fifth team to have 10 points and RR are ahead of that line based on their current net rate. KKR are now fifth with a net run rate of -0.079. However, they could go further on the basis of a win in Wednesday’s clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, both of whom have a game in hand and have 10 points each. Third-placed Lucknow Super Giants are just one point ahead of the chasing pack with 11 points, while second-placed Chennai Super Kings are at 13th. Gujarat Titans were leading the table with 16 points.

There was no change in the top five in the Orange Cap standings. However, Rinku Singh has now climbed to the 10th spot with 337 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 151.12. Faf du Plessis continues to lead the table with 511 runs at a strike rate of 157.71 and Yashasvi Jaiswal is second with 477 runs at a strike rate of 160.60.
Varun Chakaravarthy’s 3/26 took him to fifth in the Purple Cap standings. He has 17 wickets in 11 matches. Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan of Gujarat Titans and Tushar Deshpande of CSK lead the stands with 19 wickets. Shami is the first, followed by Rashid and Deshpande on economic basis. Piyush Chawla is fourth with 17 wickets.

IPL 2022: Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a flying start to their Indian Premier League campaign, defeating defending champions CSK by six wickets.
It was a comprehensive debut for Shreyas Iyer as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders as the side registered an emphatic six-wicket win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings. After restricting CSK to 131/5 in 20 overs, the Knight Riders entered the target with nine balls to spare as new CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja endured a tough outing in his first appearance as captain.

However, even as CSK suffered a heavy defeat, Mahendra Singh Dhoni – the team’s former captain – stole the show with an unbeaten half-century as he rolled back the years in style. Dhoni came at a time when CSK were chasing 61/5 in 10.5 overs. The batsman scored 50 of the next 70 runs from CSK to take the side to a respectable total.

With an unbeaten half-century off 38 deliveries, Dhoni not only holds the orange cap but also remains the only player in the game to score a fifty. Ajinkya Rahane came closest to the former Chennai Super Kings captain, with an important 44 off 34 deliveries as he opened the innings for KKR.
Despite finishing on the losing end, the Chennai Super Kings player also topped the Purple Cap list. Senior all-rounder Dwayne Bravo holds the top spot among wicket-takers, having been dismissed three times while defending a lowly target of 132 runs.
Umesh Yadav, who played a brilliant opening spell against CSK (when he dismissed openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway) is the other.
