Rinku Singh once again finished in style for Kolkata Knight Riders as they beat Punjab Kings by five wickets on Monday to keep their IPL playoff hopes alive. KKR skipper Nitish Rana’s half-century and Andre Russell’s big addition in their 180-run stand enabled Rinko to end the game with a 10-ball 21.

Earlier, Varun Chakraborty once again led their bowling department to take 26/3 as KKR put on a clean bowling display to restrict PBKS to 179 in seven overs, after which the visitors decided to hit the wickets slowly. In reply, KKR’s batting display was led by Rana’s heroics as he moved to No. 3 and laid the foundation for a 38-ball 51 (6×4, 1×6).
Needing 56 off 28 balls after Rana fell to Rahul’s second four, Russell turned the equation in KKR’s favor against Sam Curran by smoking him for 3 in four balls in 20 overs. He converted for 6 runs in the last over.
But death specialist Arshdeep Singh, who had six balls to spare, disappeared in the first four balls. When Russell departed in the last ball, a cool-headed Rinku Singh (21 not out, 10b) came to KKR’s rescue once again, scoring the winning run with a last-ball edge.
KKR’s victory in the fight for at least four qualification points has added to the problem. They are the fifth team with 10 points and RR are leading the pack in terms of their run rate. KKR now ranks fifth with a run rate of -0.079. However, they could go down depending on who wins Wednesday’s clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who both have a game in hand and have 10 points each. Third-placed Lucknow Super Giants are just one point clear of the chasing pack with 11 points, while second-placed Chennai Super Kings are at 13. Gujarat Titans are at the top of the table with 16 points.

No changes were made to the top five teams in the Orange Cap table. However, Rinku Singh has now climbed to the tenth position with 337 runs in 11 matches at a rate of 151.12. Faf du Plessis continues to lead the table with 511 runs at a rate of 157.71 while Yashasvi Jaiswal is second with 477 runs at a rate of 160.60.
3/26 Varun Chakravarti took him to fifth place in the purple cap table. He has 17 wickets in 11 matches. Mohammad Shami of Gujarat Titans and Rashid Khan and Tushar Deshpande of CSK lead the table with 19 wickets. Shami is the first, followed by Rashid and Deshpande according to their economy. Only Nathan Ellis and Rahul Char could reduce KKR’s run rate and Char took two wickets including Nitish Rana for 51 runs.
Earlier, PBKS had elected to bat first and scored 179 for 7 on a slow surface with Shikhar Dhawan scoring another fifty off 57 balls. KKR’s secret spinner Varun Chakraborty took three wickets and conceded just 26 runs in his over four overs. With this win, KKR reached the fifth position in the points table.

CSK champions Rashid Khan and Tushar Deshpande also have 17 wickets each, but their economy rates are above average.
