The 2022-23 domestic season is upon us. After a gap of two years, the tournament is all set to return in a grand avatar with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcing that over 1,500 matches will be played during the season. The first week of September 2022 comes before the start of other events in Tamil Nadu with the Duleep Trophy, which will go on till mid-March 2023 and the Indian Premier League to be held from the last week of March.

After a two-year hiatus, the prestigious Duleep Trophy will kick-start the season, and the event will return to its usual regional format. Named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar, Duleep Trophy has been organized since the 1961–62 season and the tournament has changed its format several times over the years.

The season will be played from September 8 to September 25 in a knockout format across six zones (North, South, Central, West, East, Northeast). The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy will be followed by the Irani Cup, with the T20 competition starting on 11 October 2022 and running till 5 November 2022, while the Vijay Hazare Trophy will run from 12 November to 2 December 2022. 2022. Although the Ranji Trophy is played on an elite and plate basis, teams in limited-overs tournaments are not divided in this way. Like before the pandemic, the BCCI will host multi-age tournaments contributing to the development of Indians. The Col CK Nayudu Trophy (red ball) and Senior Men’s State One-Day Trophy will be played for U-25 boys and the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and Cooch Behar Trophy for U-19 boys.
The Vinoo Mankad Trophy is a 50-over version for colts where as the Cooch Behar Trophy is played in the normal 4-day format. There are 6 groups of 6 teams in both the tournaments. However, unlike in the Ranji Trophy, the group toppers cannot directly qualify for the quarter-finals. All group toppers will be ranked 1-6, and teams ranked 1-4 will directly qualify for the QF. The second-placed teams will play teams 7–12 and the teams ranked 5–12 will play in the quarterfinals. Teams 5 vs. 12, Teams 6 vs. 11, Teams 7 vs. 10, and Teams 8 vs. 9 will play against each other for a place in the quarterfinals.
The women’s calendar will begin with the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy on October 11 as the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be held in South Africa early next year.

Following the domestic T20 trophy this season, the BCCI introduced an inter-zonal tournament, with the top 15 players from each zone competing in a round-robin format based on their performances in the tournament.
Based on the performance of the players in the inter-zonal tournament, the selectors will select the top 60 players and divide them into three teams for the T20 Challenger Trophy.
