However, all-rounder Kapil Dev led India to their first World Cup crown in 1983. The team made its intentions clear by claiming a 34-run victory over the two-time defending champions Windies. They went all the way and beat the West Indies again by 43 runs in the final to lift their first trophy.
The memorable victory marked the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket, which after a stunning World Cup campaign began to gain widespread popularity among the masses.
