Indian International Cricket Team – Without Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has urged budding English cricketers to learn from Ravindra Jadeja to carve out a long Test career.

The Indian cricket team is blessed with immense talent across the field. While players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have set standards in their respective roles, several other players like Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, etc. fall into the “superstar” category.

Many former cricketers believe that India’s depth of talent is unmatched compared to any other team in the world. Kevin Pietersen, who has been a huge fan of Indian cricket for years, has urged aspiring English cricketers to follow a certain Indian superstar and that player is Ravindra Jadeja.

England have not produced quality spinners in recent times, especially left-arm spinners. Pietersen, who has praised Jadeja for his all-round ability on several occasions, feels that the England cricket team needs a player like the Indian southpaw.

“It disappoints me that there is still no English left-arm bowler of international batting caliber. Look at what Ravindra Jadeja has done for India in Test cricket, ODI cricket and T20 cricket,” Pietersen wrote in a Betway Insider blog.

Giving advice to aspiring cricketers, the former England captain asked those learning the trade to copy Jadeja as there is a good chance that he will have a long Test career in the England national team.

“It’s the one position that the ECB have to prioritize. They have to invest in someone because someone like that is invaluable in all three formats,” added the former England captain. “If you are a kid, a beginner or a county cricketer, copy Jadeja. Copy what Jadeja is doing because he is an absolute superstar. You will have a long career as a Test cricketer for England.

England arrived in India with Jack Leach and Dom Bess as specialist spinners during the recent Test series. However, none managed to make the impact that their Indian counterparts had. Pietersen, very pointedly, wrote in his column that he does not think that the two deserve to be called Test match spinners.

“Lich is not a test match and Bess is not a test match. “I wrote almost two years ago that I hope Leach will not be remembered for the Specsavers commercials, because it is about winning Test matches,” said Pietersen.

“Unfortunately, I was right because he’s not good enough. He didn’t bowl with any team, he didn’t bowl in England to make a name for himself in Tests like Panesar and Swann did.”

In the ongoing first Test between England and New Zealand at Lord’s, the hosts did not field any specialist spinners. Captain Joe Root personally hit 12 over-spins in the first innings.

“I spoke to the captain (Virat Kohli) and vice-captain (Rohit Sharma) as well as Ravi Shastri (coach) and that’s why we came to a conclusion.

The big news, however, was Ashwin’s return. The off-spinner last played limited-overs cricket for India in 2017, after which he was restricted to Test cricket.

Since then, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal looked like the preferred option for India in limited-overs cricket, but the duo were left out of the 15-man squad, along with Rahul Chahar and mystery all-rounder Varuna. Chakravarty makes the team.
