Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed head coach of the senior men’s cricket team, BCCI announced on Wednesday.

Dravid replaces Ravi Shastri, whose term ends after the current ICC T20 World Cup. Dravid, one of the finest batsmen India has ever produced, was unanimously appointed by the Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising former international cricketers Sulakshana Naik and R.P. Singh.
“It is an absolute honor to be appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team and I am really looking forward to this role. With Shastri the team has done really well and I look forward to working with the team to take this forward.
“Having worked closely with most of the boys in the NCA, Under 19 and India ‘A’ I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day.
“There are some great multi-team events in the next two years and I look forward to working with the players and support staff to reach our potential,” Dravid said in a statement.

Dravid’s former India teammate and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly stated, “BCCI welcomes Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the senior India team. Rahul has had an illustrious career as a player and is one of the greats in the sport.
“He has also served Indian cricket as head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) with distinction. Rahul’s efforts at the NCA have nurtured a number of young cricket talents who have gone on to represent the country on the international stage. I hope his new stint will take Indian cricket to new heights.”

Two test series wins in Australia – in 2018-19 and 2020-21 – count among the highlights of Shastri’s tenure.
Earlier this year, Dravid took over as caretaker coach for the Indian team’s limited tour of Sri Lanka.
Shastri was with the Indian team for the Test tour to England held around the same time.
Dravid served as director of the NCA and coach of the India U-19 and A teams. Under Dravid’s guidance, India won the 2018 ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday made a formal announcement of the appointment of VVS Laxman as caretaker head coach of the Indian cricket team in the absence of head coach Rahul Dravid, who is currently ill with COVID-19.
Laxman, who captained the Indian ODI team in Zimbabwe, joined the UAE camp, along with KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda – who were also part of the Zimbabwe tour.

“The board is still monitoring Dravid’s health and we are still hopeful that he can join the squad at a later date,” a board source told Sportsstar, indicating that the India coach has mild symptoms and is expected to undergo another RT-PCR test in a day or two.
Until there is clarity on Dravid’s availability, Laxman will lead the coaching front, along with bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and hitting coach Vikram Rathour.

IPL periods do not have much value for CAC, as seen earlier.
Lalchand Rajput, who was the team manager when India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, has coached teams all over the world, but many of them include the likes of Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. Like Rajput, Simmons also has an extensive coaching record, but he has not coached a team of India’s stature. His profile includes teams like Ireland, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Not to forget, under him, Afghanistan recently had a terrible game, failing to win a single game at the World Cup. He also coached the West Indies for a very short period.
While both Rajput and Simmons have long coaching careers, their skills seem best suited to teams emerging or looking to break into world cricket. Coaching a team like India is a whole different ball game and it can go against them.
The two names that could give Shastri some fighting are Hesson and Moody. However, the chances of ruining Shastri’s candidacy are almost grim. Hesson coached New Zealand for six years. With him, the Black Caps reached the 2015 World Cup Final and his partnership with Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson ensured a smooth transition in New Zealand cricket.
