Girls Cricket Team – The International Cricket Council has announced its regional winners and global nominees for its 2020 Development Awards, celebrating the work of 92 Associate Members of the game in developing the game of cricket around the world.
2020 has seen a surge in the popularity of the women’s game among associated cricket members. Progress has been made in various ways, from awarding central contracts to international players to running cricket development programs and launching empowerment projects.

The ICC has announced the winners of the Development Awards for Africa, the Americas, Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, with the global winner of the Development Awards determined by an elite awards panel and announced later on the governing bodies’ channels this month.
Women’s Cricket On The Brink Of ‘1983 Moment’
Here are the regional winners and global nominees for the Development Awards’ 100% Women’s Cricket Initiative of the Year.
This award recognizes the special initiative focused on women’s cricket presented by an Associate Member to promote the game, either through a physical participation program or through a game development initiative delivered digitally during the year.
Brazil cricket made history in 2020, breaking the mold by becoming the first associate country to fully retire its women’s team ahead of the men’s return in January. Having won four of the last five South American championships, the move will propel the national team to even greater heights as they battle World Cup qualifiers and other initiatives.
The national governing body estimates that the project will benefit over 2,000 female players, from the national pathway to grassroots players. The aim of the expanded pathway is to offer more opportunities to anyone playing cricket in the country, either as a professional player or in development roles within the organisation.

Started by Ijeoma Okigbo, a journalist from Nigeria, Girls Aspire is a startup for underprivileged girls using cricket as a tool for empowerment and socio-cultural change. Starting with temporary bats and practice balls, the project grew out of the work of Okigbo, who joined an Introduction to Cricket course to impart the teachings of the game to her students.
Continuing her duties, Okigbo enlisted the help of the Nigeria Cricket Federation to host a weekly session for the Girls Aspire group, with a group of players formed to form a team for the FCT Softball Championship.
With the Gauraka community inspired and fascinated by cricket, young and old players took interest in the game, with a sudden increase in the number of players participating.

Through two projects, Nanas Iach empowers women and girls through social inclusion, education and other development initiatives. Program 1 focuses on cricket clinics, cancer health awareness and gardening, with Program 2 including games, non-communicable disease awareness campaigns and initiatives aimed at discussing domestic violence.
More than 200 women attended the programs over 20 weeks, with a steady increase in the number of women and girls taking part in adapted cricket and indoor competitions, even after the national lockdowns at the start of the year. The ratio of male to female players in Samoa according to ICC data is 50/50.
Malaysia launched a number of awareness programs in 2020 in a bid to attract more women to the sport and received support from the Sime Darby Foundation in the form of nearly US$1.5 million.
Dedicated to the Adiwira Cricket programme, which runs in 269 schools across the country, over 17,000 girls have participated in the project through either virtual Covid-safe training or outdoor play. The program was led by more than 225 female teachers who participated in the entry-level training programs.
