In one of the wildest 20th overs ever played in a T20 match, a flashpoint came as the Pakistan side gathered around umpire Rod Tucker in protest. Their anger was that Virat Kohli was ruled out from a free kick but still claimed three points as the ball fell to third man.

Despite these protests, the ball was not a dead ball, as the batsman can only exit the free kick in four ways, viz. to handle the ball, he hits the ball twice, interferes with the field and runs away.
The three points were therefore given as three points and Dinesh Karthik struck for 2 points to take the last 2 balls.

Since Kohli was not out as the throw was a free kick, the ball was not dead when the ball hit his stumps.
There was a dead ball earlier in the game, when the Pakistan batsman’s shot hit the spider camera and the umpires ruled the ball dead. Unfortunately for Pakistan, not in Kohli’s case.
There was a very similar incident in the Women’s Big Bash League this week in the match between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Stars.

Kohli’s unbeaten 53 off 82 balls gave India a 4-wicket win over Pakistan on the last ball of the match. India’s next match in the T20 World Cup is against the Netherlands.

As the next delivery was absent, Nawaz managed to bowl Kohli as he brought down the shot, but as it was a free, Kohli was safe. The batsman, along with partner Dinesh Karthik, made three runs. But controversy arose after Pakistani players, including captain Babar Azam, argued with the umpire about whether points should be awarded to the Indian team.

According to the commentators, it looked like Babar wanted the delivery to be called a “dead ball” as it hit the stumps.
According to the MCC Laws of Cricket, the ball can only become dead when it is “finally placed in the hands of the wicket-keeper or bowler”, or when “a boundary is marked”.
A ball may also be called a dead ball when “the stroke is returned. The ball shall be considered dead from the time of the incident which caused the return.”
Law – 20.1.1 – also prescribes other different ways of declaring a dead ball, including when the referee has the authority to decide. As for the ball hitting the stumps, the umpire can declare the ball dead when “one or both fielders fall out of the striker’s wicket before the striker has had a chance to play the ball”.
