Free Hit In Cricket – CricketHow Virat Kohli gets 3 frees despite hitting Here’s why the fourth ball in the 20th over in India’s T20 World Cup chase against Pakistan wasn’t a dead ball.

In one of the wildest 20th overs ever played in a T20 match, a flashpoint came as the Pakistan side gathered around umpire Rod Tucker in protest. Their anger was that Virat Kohli was ruled out from a free kick but still claimed three points as the ball fell to third man.

Their contention was that since the ball hit the stumps, it should have been a dead ball. Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg also raised objection as the match ended with the last ball in favor of India.

Despite these protests, the ball was not a dead ball, as the batsman can only exit the free kick in four ways, viz. to handle the ball, he hits the ball twice, interferes with the field and runs away.

The three points were therefore given as three points and Dinesh Karthik struck for 2 points to take the last 2 balls.

20.1.1.3 the batter is out. The ball shall be considered dead from the moment the drop-out occurs.”

Since Kohli was not out as the throw was a free kick, the ball was not dead when the ball hit his stumps.

There was a dead ball earlier in the game, when the Pakistan batsman’s shot hit the spider camera and the umpires ruled the ball dead. Unfortunately for Pakistan, not in Kohli’s case.

Kohli’s unbeaten 53 off 82 balls gave India a 4-wicket win over Pakistan on the last ball of the match. India’s next match in the T20 World Cup is against the Netherlands.

Dead ball controversy explained: Why India were awarded 3 passes after Virat Kohli was knocked out from a free kick against Pakistan

Controversy arose in the final of the match when India were dismissed after Kohli was knocked out by a free kick in the match against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.

The Indian team registered a dramatic four-wicket win against Pakistan in the first match of the T20 World Cup on Sunday. The team scored 160 runs in exactly 20 overs with Ravichandran Ashwin hitting the winning runs on the last ball of the match. However, Virat Kohli emerged as the hero of the match for India as the batsman remained unbeaten on 82 off just 53 deliveries, leading the team to a winning start to the marquee tournament.

However, the match was not without controversy; while Axar Patel’s decision caused a huge outcry among the fans, as many believed that Rizwan had taken the bails off his gloves, the final also caused drama at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. On the fourth plus delivery, Kohli smashed a huge six over Mohammad Nawaz as the team needed 13 runs from three deliveries; seconds later, the referee also called a height foul.

As the next delivery was absent, Nawaz managed to bowl Kohli as he brought down the shot, but as it was a free, Kohli was safe. The batsman, along with partner Dinesh Karthik, made three runs. But controversy arose after Pakistani players, including captain Babar Azam, argued with the umpire about whether points should be awarded to the Indian team.

Pak Vs Ind: Umpires Under Hot Water For No Ball, Free Hit

According to the commentators, it looked like Babar wanted the delivery to be called a “dead ball” as it hit the stumps.

According to the MCC Laws of Cricket, the ball can only become dead when it is “finally placed in the hands of the wicket-keeper or bowler”, or when “a boundary is marked”.

A ball may also be called a dead ball when “the stroke is returned. The ball shall be considered dead from the time of the incident which caused the return.”

Law – 20.1.1 – also prescribes other different ways of declaring a dead ball, including when the referee has the authority to decide. As for the ball hitting the stumps, the umpire can declare the ball dead when “one or both fielders fall out of the striker’s wicket before the striker has had a chance to play the ball”.

Free Hit In Cricket — Any Logic ?

In a free-kick, only four methods of delivery are allowed – handling the ball, hitting the ball twice, interfering with the pitch and running out – and as a result, India got a bye as the ball was still in play. it took 5 runs to win three balls before the ball was delivered, the equation came down to 2 needed for as many deliveries.

With Dinesh Karthik stumped on the next delivery, Ashwin kept his composure to guide India to victory with a lob shot over mid-on.

Steve Smith Signals Free Hit After Smashing Six But Why This Video Will Tell You

Indian fans went wild for their World T20 win, but those of the Pakistani persuasion had to think about two umpire’s calls in the final.

A no-ball call to a full toss from a waist-high spinner and then a run despite Virat Kohli’s stumps being rattled by a free hit had some scratching their heads and jumping for the rulebook.

On the fourth ball of the final of the match, bowled by Pakistan’s Mohammad Nawaz, Virat Kohli bowled a full toss over the square leg boundary and immediately extended his hand to signal that there was no ball.

It was an incredible presence of mind and clarity at a high-pressure moment from the Indian maestro in the midst of what he later described as his best innings in the format.

Understanding The Free Hit In Cricket: Rules, Usage, And Impact

Standing square-legged, the decision to judge the height fell to the highly experienced and respected South African referee Marais Erasmus.

First he turned and watched Kohli’s shot sail to the boundary, where Asif Ali tried unsuccessfully to keep it in the infield, first missing Kohli’s no-ball call.

After the six was confirmed, Erasmus signaled that the delivery was above the waist and standing umpire Rod Tucker signaled the pass.

Clause 41.7.1 of the Law of , and the ICC T20 World Cup Playing Conditions, confirm: “Any throw, which passes or would pass, without the throw, above the waist height of the striker standing at the level of the crease crease, must be adjudged unfair.”

ICC Changes Powerplay, Fielding, Free Hit Rules In Odis

The laws were updated in 2017 to remove the distinction between fast and slow bowlers – previously slow bowlers were only off the ball for full throws above shoulder height.

Although the interpretation of whether the ball was above the waist or not remains subjective and at the discretion of the referee.

The incident was similar to the thrilling women’s ODI between Australia and India in September last year, when a full waist ball was called which saw the Aussies escape with victory.

On this occasion, the third umpire made a decisive intervention to review the call, upheld as Australian all-rounder Nicola Carey was caught off guard.

As Kohli’s shot went for a six, there was no opportunity under ICC conditions to review the no-ball decision.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam was in a heated argument with Tucker before Erasmus returned at square leg to clear, which seemed to defuse the situation.

The equation was now six from three for India, with a free-kick following and Nawaz, under pressure, slotting wide.
