He was the first Indian captain of Oxford University. Mansoor had a fatal accident on 1 July 1961 when a piece of glass entered his right eye and injured him permanently. People feared that he would not lead a brilliant career in cricket. But Mansoor did not lose hope and started playing with one eye. Less than six months later, he made his India debut and scored a century in the third Test of his career, which was India’s first Test series win in England.
Then in 1962 a formidable tour of the West Indies. Destiny had planned some dramatic plans for Mansoor who was appointed vice-captain. It was the strongest West Indies team led by Sir Frank Worrell and included Sir Gary Sobers, Rohan Kanhai, Wes Hall and Lance Gibbs. India lost the first two Tests miserably as Mansoor was ruled out due to injury. Before the third Test match, in the tour game against Barbados, Indian skipper Nari Contractor was hit on the skull by Charlie Griffiths bouncer. It was the most serious blow that nearly killed the contractor and ended his career as an ordeal forever.
With none of the senior players interested in the role of stop-gap captaincy, Mansoor was given the task of leading India in the third Test. He was barely 21 years old. On March 23, 1962, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi became the youngest ever experimental teacher at the age of 21 years and 77 days. The testimony spanned 40 years, making 20-year-old Tatenda Taibu the youngest witness to Zimbabwe’s massive political unrest.
Mansoor did not get off to a good start to his leadership career as India lost the series 0-5. But over time he became one of India’s most modern and intelligent leaders. He led India to nine wins in 445 Tests. This record was not broken until Mohammad Azharuddin won 14 matches as captain.
