Domestic Cricket – Domestic cricket has always questioned the value of the players’ performances. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has changed the national structure several times since the last two decades. The type of structure ranges from green top fields to batting havens, from two-tier departmental cricket to departmental and regional cricket teams playing against each other and then recently experienced a 180-degree restructuring.
The latest structure consists of six regional cricket teams in all formats, which compete against each other twice at the league stage. The top two or four teams advance to the semifinals or finals. But why do we pick domestic players late and give them a chance at the national level? Let’s find out what is wrong with Pakistan’s domestic cricket.
Domestic Cricket
Let’s start with the story of Fawad Alam, Nauman Ali and Tabish Khan, who were recently included in Pakistan’s Test squad. The three players mentioned have performed brilliantly in domestic cricket, but have been deprived of the green star for a long time. Finally, Fawad Alam was selected in the comeback squad but did not get a direct opportunity. The comeback is even more difficult than the debut, because the critics are more active.

Fawad finally got his chance – but again he wasn’t an automatic choice. Rather, he was given another chance in the absence of other players; however, the rest is history. As for Tabish Khan, he continued to perform year after year and earned his first Test call-up to the national team…after taking 598 wickets in first-class cricket. However, the series against South Africa ended without him getting a green cap.
Moving on to the same story, that of left-arm spinner Nauman Ali. He was appointed as Northern captain (home team) and not only did it but also made his team one of the successful teams after the last internal restructuring. He was a late bloomer as far as appearances in domestic cricket were concerned, but he still had to perform for the last four years consistently until he earned his first Test call-up. However, the team management saw something in him and picked him for both Tests against South Africa. There, he was instrumental in Pakistan’s series victory.
Such statements are often heard and spread in the mass media, especially in social networks. However, year after year and player after player, domestic performers have managed to turn the tables at the international level. Fawad Alam and Nauman Ali are two recent examples, but the past also witnessed the same. Tanveer Ahmad and Abdur Rauf are two local players who showed promise at the international level but were picked at the end of their careers and dropped soon after. Consistency has always remained an issue for Pakistan’s national side from the selection committee.
On the other hand, there is a long list of players who have performed consistently at the domestic level but have struggled mightily in international cricket. This aspect always makes people question about domestic cricket and its value. Some errors are also on the selection committee’s end, as players are often selected on a one-off performance or for the wrong format.
Domestic Cricket Offers Different Challenge: Rahul
Voters also don’t have the ability to assess which format is best for a player. A prime example is Abdullah Shafiq, who is a promising prospect for 50-over and Test cricket. However, he was picked for the T20I side after a good performance in the National T20 Cup despite his average strike rate. Understandably, he struggled on his debut in Pakistan.
Now the way forward and how to select domestic players for the national team should be rigid and standard. A player who plays in domestic tournaments, be it T20, 50-over or four-day cricket, should be evaluated for at least 2-3 years. Any player can have one good season. As such, players must demonstrate a certain consistency before accepting the first challenge.
This not only improves the selection structure but also proves the point to all domestic cricketers that consistency will be rewarded. This selection mechanism will also increase transparency.
The new domestic structure shows competitiveness, standardization and improved quality. Let’s hope this framework fills the necessary gap.

The BCCI has issued detailed guidelines, prepared by the board’s medical team, for state associations to resume domestic cricket activities in the country. In a 100-page directive, the BCCI has asked the government authorities to appoint a chief medical officer who, along with the medical staff, will be responsible for implementing biosecurity guidelines during training sessions and matches.
According to a report by ANI, the BCCI will seek permission from the local administration and health authorities to resume practice and matches. CMO must be available to team members for all medical needs. The idea is to create a bio-safe environment. According to the rules, although some spectators are allowed, they must follow a strict protocol.
The report added that players and support staff with suspected symptoms similar to COVID-19 should undergo a PCR test. Two tests will be performed daily – the first day and the third day – to account for false negative results. If both test results are negative, then they will be admitted to the camp.
According to Sportstar, the guidelines say that as part of the return to practice policy, each country’s medical team will be required to take the travel and medical history of all players and staff over the past two weeks via an online questionnaire.
