Mangaluru: The demand of Dakshina Kannada cricket fans has finally been accepted. The Karnataka cabinet has decided the site for an international standard cricket stadium. 23.25 acres of land has been given in Kabaka village of Puttur and this stadium will be constructed at a cost of around Rs 50 crore. Through this, the demand of last 10 years has been answered. The Karnataka State Cricket Association will build a stadium for Dakshina cricket fans.

Apart from Bangalore city, the developing Dakshina Kannada district of the state has been in need of an international level cricket stadium for many years. Now the answer to the request of cricket lovers is getting closer. The stadium will be constructed at Periyatodi under the Kabaka Gram Panchayat of Puttur and the state government has also provided land for the construction of the stadium.
For the last 10 years, the undivided Dakshina Kannada district has been demanding an international standard cricket stadium and sites have been booked at Konaje in Mangalore, Kabaka in Puttur and Karakala in Udupi district. Among them, the state cabinet has decided to allot land for construction of a stadium at Periattodi village in Kabaka Puttur taluka.
Agreement documents related to land will be exchanged with KSCA soon. 48.5 crores around Rs. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) plans to build an international standard cricket stadium with grants.
In the early days in Mangaluru, former cricketer Anil Kumble had convinced the state government of the need for an international standard cricket stadium for cricket practice in Dakshina Kannada district. Accordingly, as land was not available in Mangaluru city, the then Collector AB Ibrahim instructed the tehsildars to reserve land in the rural areas through the mandal officers.

A 22-acre international cricket stadium at Konaje, Mangalore and a 6-acre mini stadium at Maryhill have been booked. Earlier, 18 acres of land was reserved at Karakala in Udupi district.
Also 23.25 acres land no. 260/1P Kabaka Gram Panchayat of Puttur has been dedicated as a cricket stadium. The proposal is still half-baked as the land is suitable for the construction of a government housing estate and the local government has requested that the cricket stadium not be built. Now the same land is given by the state government for cricket stadium.
A fully equipped stadium will be completed by 2024 at a cost of Rs 50 crore at Hoddur village in Madikeri taluka on an area of 23 acres. The construction of the International Cricket Stadium has started and will be completed by 2024. KSCA also plans to build a stadium on the same model at Puttur. There are swimming pool, restaurant, 1000 capacity auditorium, shuttle badminton, billiards, flash, basketball etc facilities.
Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore has a maximum seating capacity of 40 thousand. This will lead to the construction of a bigger and different international standard cricket stadium at Puttur. But the stadium will initially be used only for training and domestic Ranji tournaments. BCCI will have to make necessary changes as per ICC rules if international matches are held.
