Virat Kohli’s selection was dropped for 11 runs not because of his illness. Bess thought he needed to go a touch wider to bring both edges into play. He pulled Kohli forward and took the inside edge with a bit of hard arm spin and was caught at short leg by Ollie Pope. Kohli fell a little short on the return and never used his feet to get Bess down and outrun him, a feat he is unlikely to repeat.

The full toss was sent by Ajinkya Rahane at extra cover where Root took a blind diving catch to left and Bess was third as Pujara’s brilliant innings ended accidentally. He hit a short ball and pulled it hard and Pope covered it with his shoulder at short leg and caught Rory Burns at mid-on.
Bess was more accurate for Sri Lanka, bowling a better length, but tired in the final hour and Pant tried to hit it over the ropes with an eye to the cloth. Bess bowled a charming catch to Pant, who kept him out for a run, gifting his winger with his side still trailing by 352 with two days to go.
