Dubai – India’s Rohit Sharma has come under fire for “cutting and changing” as they failed to reach the final of the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament.

India, who won the previous Asia Cup in 2018, playing in the 50-over format, were pre-tournament favourites, but lost their first two Super Four games to Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
“I think there is too much chopping and changing after a defeat,” former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel told cricbuzz.
India’s forgery was not limited to the latter stages – Dinesh Karthik was the wicket-keeper in India’s first win over Pakistan, while Rishabh Pant was brought back behind the stumps for the next match.
Karthik, a heavy hitter who specializes as a finisher in the short format, missed both the Super Four matches as the left-handed Pant was placed in the middle order.

“Consistency and clarity of thought is very important, especially when you play this T20 format,” Patel said.
“Dinesh Karthik came in and he was left (out). Rishabh Pant came and will wonder whether I am a permanent member of the team or not.”
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar blamed the lack of flexibility with planning for India’s disappointing results.
“Too much theory… is not a very good thing. What happens on the field is completely different,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“There should be plan A, B and C, where the Indian team has no alternative plan in this tournament.
“Cricket is a game that changes in seconds, especially in the T20 format, and you have to be ready for that.”

They will have home series against Australia and South Africa to strengthen the team’s plans before the T20 World Cup starts on October 16 in Australia.
India’s only success in the T20 World Cup came in the inaugural tournament in 2007, and Gavaskar asked the team “please look at the areas where you can improve and address their weaknesses”.
India remain at the top of the T20 team rankings but have consistently faltered in global internationals, with their last International Cricket Council title coming in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
India failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year in the United Arab Emirates and lost in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup in England.

But captain Sharma replayed his team’s Asia Cup debacle after they lost a close match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
“In tournaments like World Cup, Asia Cup, the challenge here is to face different teams with different plans,” Sharma said.
“But we shouldn’t think too much about it. Yes, the pressure is there and it’s our job to make people understand how to push themselves in situations.”

While the men have long enjoyed rock star status in the cricket-crazy nation, their counterparts have had to fight hard to be taken seriously.
However, the fight is finally starting to bear fruit, and 15 years after the Indian Premier League (IPL) began, the full women’s T20 tournament will begin in March.
