Below is an interview with artist Santanu Hazarika who designed the bus on how he designed the artwork and how it fits into Rajasthan Royals’ plans this year.
Whenever I design a car or something with a more geometric shape, I try to keep the shape of the design in mind. For example, the Rajasthan Royals tour bus is rectangular, so I imagine the layout is a moving brick. The entire design revolves around the Rajasthan Royals and what the Royal Rajasthan Foundation stands for, along with the kinetic moving object on which it is designed.
Growing up, I really liked video games like Need For Speed and racing games. So most of the elements I used were inspired by decals and racing stripes. It will really increase the bus movement. So I used the players in a version sketched in a kinetic form of design. So you can see the design, there are spikes coming out of the rear wheel, like a racing gradient. And that gradient is inspired by the gradient that is on the Rajasthan Royals team jersey for 2021.
The first step is to get the briefing clear, which thanks to RedBull India and the Rajasthan Royals team, we went well to the briefing stage and they were very clear about what they wanted. So I sat down with my iPad and started sketching all the possible designs I could make with all the ingredients. It is like a permutation and combination of dots. Initially, I designed the Royal Rajasthan Foundation bus where I used the four key elements that the foundation stands for. One of the elements is the lion; so I made a visceral lion shape stretching towards the direction of the moving bus. The lion signifies pride for the Royal Rajasthan Foundation. And for the Rajasthan Royals team bus, I used the same visceral style, but for the team players.

For me, the first thing is to find the model because I only know that it is a Volvo bus but there are many different models. Thanks to my engineering degree, I know how to measure model sizes. So it took about three days to get the right measurements and dimensions by making calculations based on the bus model. So I got some images from the team, he calculated everything, including the distance of the wheel from the front end, the face, the area of the windows, the cuts and curves – a lot of calculations entered before the design is placed. So I have a rough sketch of the bus, a scaled version accurate to three decimal points. So I made a design and then scaled it to overlay the design of the bus itself.
You will never have completely accurate measurements of the final design – there will always be human error or printing error. The design should incorporate such mistakes so that they don’t appear and look like mistakes. For example, near the headlights, I kept more space in the design so even if there is a mistake in the calculation or in attaching the decal, it will not seem like a mistake. So, in this case, I designed the headlight to look like eyes, so the front of the bus looks like the creature’s face.
If you look at the design of the bus, it has all the elements of Rajasthan Royals. For example, pride is one of the four elements or motifs of Rajasthan Royals. So I use these four design reasons, which are included in the background. If you look closely, you can see four cube-shaped motifs in the background, like the Rajasthan Royals jersey 2021. So the design of the bus is a straight parallel drawn on the jersey, the reasons that stand of the Royal Rajasthan Foundation, and an idea of how the Rajasthan Royals team works. So I think that’s what fans can relate to.
I would say that I want people to feel energy when they see the design because it is a sports team with energy. And I also want to say that people think it’s cool, because it’s a unique combination of colors; Pink is one of my favorite colors and one of the most wrong colors. So the feeling I want to be with is energy and pride, which is the same with RedBull and Rajasthan Royals.
