Cricket 11 – From Ashton Agar’s heroics against England to beating Richard Collinge’s Test best more than four decades ago, we look at the best knocks by number 11 batsmen in cricket’s oldest form.
Most of the 11 batsmen who appear in the number of Tests look to the formation of opposition bowlers and fielders who are eager to shut down the opposition at the first opportunity. However, over the years, Test cricket has given us countless examples of top batsmen who have come to the rescue of their teams in the most unlikely of circumstances. Here we look at some of the best Test knocks by a number 11 batsman.
Cricket 11
Ashton Agar’s Test debut in Australia’s tour of England and Scotland in 2013 was a late one, although he was disappointed that the Aussies finished on the losing side. Walking into the middle during Australia’s first innings with the score 9 for 117 after England had already posted 215 in their first innings, Agar continued to wow the crowd as he put on a partnership of 163 with Phillip Hughes.

He seemed to play without any strange nerves, hitting 12 fours and two sixes on his way to a 101-ball 98. Unfortunately for Australia, they went on to lose the match after improving. However, Agar’s heroics at number 11 during Tests seem unlikely to be forgotten anytime soon.
West Indian pacer Tino Best also scored the highest Test score with 11 wickets against England. Best made 95 for West Indies as they came in as their last batsmen to score 9 for 283 in the third Test between the teams on the 2012 tour of England. To everyone’s surprise, Best looked unflappable against the English bowlers and went on to stitch a 143-wicket partnership with Denesh Ramdin who scored an unbeaten 107. .
His best knock saw him hit 14 fours and a six as he scored 95 off 112 balls at a strike rate of 84.82. His innings helped West Indies score a formidable 426, which went a long way to level the match. He also scored two goals for the team with the ball in hand and deserved to be judged as player of the match.
Although England’s players have endured their fair share of struggles against the seamers, it has to be said that their low order has also caused plenty of problems for their opponents. Perhaps the best such example is James Anderson’s 81 in the first Test on India’s 2014 tour of England. After India posted 457 in the first innings, England looked in all sorts of trouble as Anderson went on the rampage with the hosts at 9 for 298.

Little did anyone know then that Anderson was in no mood to throw in the towel without a fight as he went on to achieve his highest Test score. He made 81 against a demoralized Indian bowler and was part of a 198 stand with Joe Root. Anderson hit 17 boundaries and also claimed four wickets in the match to pick up the player of the match award if the Test ended in a draw.
Unlike Anderson, Zaheer Khan’s top Test wicket came as a result of his team’s victory. The Indian batsman had already left the mark in the first Test opening during India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2004. He claimed two wickets as India bundled out the hosts for 184 without breaking a sweat. However, it was Zaheer’s performance with the bat in India’s first innings that surprised many.
He made 75 off 115 deliveries after hitting 10 fours and a couple of maximums. His knock helped take India’s total from 393 to 526 as he eventually surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 248 at the other end. Zaheer and Tendulkar eventually put on a 133-run stand and the former also claimed his third Test wicket in Bangladesh’s second innings as India won comfortably by 140 runs.
The oldest batsman at number 11 on this list, Richard Collinge’s unbeaten 68 against Pakistan in the third Test of New Zealand’s Asian tour in 1973. The Kiwis to Pakistan had already posted 402 in their first match. However, instead of throwing his wicket away in the manner of most batsmen at the time, Collinge dug deep and put together a 151-run partnership with Brian Hastings, who scored 110 innings.

However, Collinge’s unbeaten 68 cannot be underestimated and was crucial as New Zealand also scored 402 on their debut. He hit six fours as well as the maximum in his innings and proved to be a disappointment for the Pakistani bowlers. Collinge also picked up four wickets – two each – in the match, which ended in a draw.
