Barde’s comments come after a recent court case in which the Karnataka HC asked the state government to take action on online gambling. The Karnataka High Court has ordered the state government to withdraw the notification that it sought to ban all forms of online betting.

“Countries should consider setting up gambling commissions. These should have representatives from industry, law, housing, IT and I&B ministries as well as private sector organizations. This will form a strong body that can legislate to ensure that companies are operating with good rules and are accountable to users. Globally, there are many brands being followed in different countries for online games, I am sure we will be able to create one that works best for India,” he said.

Many of these sites operate in countries where online gambling is legal but the rules are not defined,” he said. If there is a dispute, legal action against such platforms is not possible as their location or ownership is unknown, he said.

Barde said all of his member platforms follow the code of conduct set by TORF to protect transparency and user safety and prevent the issue of gambling addiction.
