No Dream Final With Pakistan As Hapless India Thrown Out Of World Cup By England
The first year Virat Kohli led India during the subsequent tour of South Africa, India saw six different players perform the role in different formats.
A lot has been said about the strength of India’s bench, how they can field a strong team at times. They did this last year in July-August when their Test team was visiting the UK while the white ball team was going to Sri Lanka at the same time.
Similarly, it seems that the Indian team is building a kind of power bench without realizing it. We have entered the seventh month of 2022 and already, seven different leaders are leading India across the board.
They have had four different captains in Tests (Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah), three in ODIs (Rahul, Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan) and three in T20Is (Rohit, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya).
Boys Didn’t Lose Self Belief…
Gone are the days when Virat Kohli had the feat of all three in a row. From November 2021, the batsman first stopped ruling the T20Is before the Indians chose to replace him as captain in the scheduled ODIs. In January, Kohli resigned as India’s head coach after a tour of South Africa.
In ideal circumstances, Rohit would have led them in the series, every time. However, a combination of factors including injuries, workload and job management made it impossible.
So, the likes of Kohli, Rahul, Rohit, Rishabh, Hardik, Bumrah and now Dhawan have led/will lead India at different times in 2022.
On this count, it looks like India will end up with 12 different captains by the end of this year.
Not Pandya, Ex India Cricketer Backs Star Player As Rohit’s Ideal Successor
After being relieved of the white-ball captaincy, Kohli continued to lead India in Test cricket. He dominated in two of the three Tests against the Proteas in the 2021-22 season, but missed the second match due to a back problem. Although it ended soon after the series ended as India won the series 1-2.
With Rohit ineligible, KL Rahul led India during the three-match ODI series against South Africa. India suffered a 0-3 series loss.
At their best, Rohit led India to sweep Sri Lanka in T20Is (3-0) and Tests (2-0) in February-March.
With Rohit injured again, Rahul was made captain for five T20Is against South Africa in June. Unfortunately, Rahul picked up an injury on the night of the series which meant that the captaincy went to Rishabh. The match ended with a score of 2-2 and the final match was scoreless.
India Women Team Captain Mithali Raj Retires
Rohit and Rishabh are in India’s Test squad for the rescheduled five-match series against England at Edgbaston. However, this time, the opportunity to lead the team went to Pandya who had just led IPL debutant Gujarat Titans to win the title. India won the match 2-0.
A few days before the test, Rohit tested positive for COVID-19. The team management waited until the evening of the match hoping that the cricketer would recover. However, it will not. Few predicted that Kohli would be handed the reins when he bowled the first four Tests in a row last year. Finally, Bumrah became the first run-scorer since Kapil Dev led India in Tests. The visitors, however, lost the match by seven wickets.
Barring a last-minute injury concern (fingers crossed), Dhawan will be the seventh different player to lead the Indian men’s cricket team this year when they face the West Indies in a three-match ODI series starting on Friday. Rohit, Rishabh Pant, Pandya, Kohli among others
