Cadbury Cricket – In the 1990s, confectionery giant Cadbury launched a popular advertisement featuring model Shimona Rashi. Dressed in a floral dress, she sat on the sidelines of a cricket match munching on a Cadbury Dairy milk bar. When the character – presumably her boyfriend – scored the winning run, she went through security to celebrate with a dance on the field as the tagline ‘Aasli Swaad Zindagi Ka’ played in the background. The ad, created by advertising agency Ogilvy, is widely credited with changing the perception that chocolate is only for children.
More than a century and a half later, Cadbury has reimagined its iconic ad – and little has changed except the gender roles. At this time, a women’s cricket match is going on, and a man is watching from the sidelines as he eats dairy milk. When his girlfriend hits the winning six, he dances in celebration and rushes onto the pitch to hug her.

In a country where cricket has been largely synonymous with men’s cricket for decades, the ads signal a shift in public perception of the game. Social media users quickly took note of Cadbury’s endorsement of this popular ad and praised the company for turning gender roles on their head.

Home / Entertainment / TV / Cadbury remakes famous ad with female character, Shankar Mahadevan’s 27-year-old song is still available
Cadbury has recreated their famous cricket pitch ad, but this time with a female character cheered on by her boyfriend.
Singer-music director Shankar Mahadevan feels overwhelmed after watching the new Cadbury ad. The new ad is a 1994 cheesy entertainer in which a girl celebrates her character boyfriend’s big win by nonchalantly dancing on the cricket field. This time though, a guy breaks into a jig after his girlfriend hits a six.

Almost all the scenes of both the commercials are the same. Even the original song, What’s Special, sung by Shankar in 1994, has been preserved. He shared the announcement on Instagram and wrote: “After 27 years it’s back!! The roles are changing!! The company decided to keep the same song I recorded in 1994!! Nostalgia.”

Also remember Shankar’s friends from the music industry. “Wow!! Brings back all the old memories,” singer Harshdeep Kaur wrote. Singer Anusha Mani wrote, “This is amazing! Great song by Louis Banks and you look amazing in the movie!!
Dia Mirza and Navya Naveli Nanda left heart emojis on Cadbury’s post on Instagram. Many fans also got emotional after seeing the old ad. Complimenting the male actor, the dance moves popularized by model Shimona Rashi in the original have completely relaxed.
Shankar is currently working on a documentary about his life, Decoding Shankar, which won two awards at the Cannes International Film Festival. Directed by Deepti Pillai Sivan, it won in the Best Hindi Film and Best Biographical Film categories.
He told Hindustan Times about this, “We didn’t think that this film would have such a big impact on the audience and critics. I never thought that my life story would be captured on screen in a book or a film I never cared enough about myself to get stuck in my pursuits and achievements.”
