New Delhi, Feb 2 () — Women’s cricket is poised to emerge from the dominant shadow of the men’s game in India, and the rest of the world is gearing up for the birth of a sporting superpower.

While the cricket-crazy country’s male players have long enjoyed rock star status, their female counterparts struggle to be taken seriously.

However, the results of their struggle are starting to show and the full women’s T20 tournament is set to begin in March, 15 years after the Indian Premier League (IPL) began.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already raked in nearly $690 million from the sale of franchise and media rights, a revenue stream that will increase further when a title sponsor comes to the table later this month.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur termed the league as a “game changer” for women’s cricket in the country, adding to the excitement among Indian fans for the women’s game.
That enthusiasm was evident in the home T20 series against Australia in December, which the tourists won 4-1.

“Women’s cricket may not be more popular than men’s cricket in India, but we can certainly hope to match them.”

For the rest of the cricketing world, excitement over the earning potential of top players in the WPL is tempered by concern over a repeat of India’s already formidable strength in the men’s game.

Pune-born former Australian captain Lisa Sthalekar told Cricinfo: “Many players fear that India will dominate world cricket when the Women’s IPL starts.

“The value they bring to the (WPL) teams just goes to show how valuable and how important women’s cricket is and how it is viewed by potential investors.”

Dream11 was the only serious contender in the race as Disney Star was the other company to pick up the tender documents, a source told ET.

Fantasy sports platform Dream11 has acquired the main sponsorship rights for the Indian cricket team from July 2023 to March 2026 for a base price of Rs 358 crore, multiple people confirmed to ET.
The Dream11 logo as the main sponsor will be displayed on the front of the Indian Men’s, Women’s and Under-19 cricket team jerseys.

A top official of a sports marketing firm has blamed the exorbitant base price set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the poor response to the jersey sponsorship race.

“The base price set by the BCCI was lower than what was given to By (the previous major sponsor) but still very high,” said an executive on condition of anonymity. “As a result, many companies were not interested in participating in the bid.”
The BCCI has set a base price of Rs 3 crore per match for bilateral matches with India and Rs 1 crore per match for International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asian Cricket Conference (ACC) competitions.
The base cost is Rs 358 crore for the 150 matches that Team India will play in bilateral and multi-team tournaments in the sponsorship rights cycle.

The Indian cricket board has banned betting, cryptocurrency, tobacco and real money gambling companies from bidding for title sponsor rights.
The tender for the rights of the main sponsor of the national team was published on June 14, and the deadline for purchase was June 26.
Advertising industry sources told ET that advertisers are still cautious about making big investments. BCCI’s introduction also disrupted the exit of new age groups from the sponsorship arena.
In 2019, mobile phone maker Oppo replaced Byu as the jersey sponsor of the Indian cricket team. After acquiring the jersey sponsorship rights for five years for Rs 1,079.29 crore in March 2017, Oppo walked away from the deal by transferring its sponsorship rights to Byju’s.

According to experts, the sponsorship offers by Oppo and Byju do not accurately reflect the state of the industry.
Vinit Karnik, head of sports, e-sports and entertainment, GroupM South Asia, recently told ET that the Indian Premier League (IPL) and bilateral matches will generate an estimated Rs. 2000 crores to Rs. A list of field sponsors worth Rs 2,500 crore will be created. Available this year.
According to the GroupM India Sports Sponsorship Report 2023, the advertising revenue of the Indian sports industry grew by 49% to Rs 14,209 crore in 2022 and is expected to reach Rs 16,000 crore in 2023.
