The Perfect Count For Beating The House In Blackjack
The Hi-Lo system is probably the easiest and fastest blackjack card counting strategy to learn. Each card in a 52 card deck is assigned a value of +1, 0 or -1. How to rate each card:
The Hi-Lo card counting strategy is known as a “balanced system” where the sum of all cards in a 52 card deck is 0.
EXAMPLE: You get 10 and 7; the dealer shows a 6. You stand, the dealer shows an ace and you push. What is the number?
Once you have memorized the values of each playing card in blackjack, you can try practicing the hi-lo run count.
Counting Cards In Blackjack With The Ko (knockout) System
The easiest way is to try the card counting exercise we mentioned earlier. However, there are some more traditional, low-tech solutions.
The most basic practice technique to master the run count is to take a 52-card deck and count the cards one by one using the Hi-Lo card values above. When you reach the bottom of the pile, your count should be zero.
In an ideal world, you should be able to accurately count a deck of 52 cards and reach zero in half a minute or less. This speed will be essential when you implement the Hi-Lo card counting strategy seriously at the blackjack tables.
Another clever technique to improve your hi-lo run count is to remove a random card from the 52-card deck without seeing its value. Continue counting the rest of the deck and you should be able to see if the card you removed was a +1, neutral or -1 card. If you guessed wrong from the 51st card, you didn’t practice hard enough!
Reading Blackjack Charts
When you feel confident that you have caught the Hi-Lo run count, have a friend or family member play the role of the dealer and play a round of hands against them. After a few rounds, there should still be more cards left in the deck. To monitor how well you’ve been keeping a running count, add your last running count to the cards remaining in the deck. If the final count is zero, you’ve mastered it. If not, practice makes perfect.
TIP: Card counting at blackjack tables in land-based casinos is frowned upon (but not illegal). Try to avoid making it obvious that you are keeping a running count, as this may result in your dealer alerting the pit boss.

Blackjack Strategy And Card Counting Cards
If you don’t factor the remaining decks into your calculations in a multi-deck game, you’re taking an overly optimistic view of your chances of winning.
True count tells you how many MORE high cards there are compared to low cards when there is only one game left in the game.
The correct count at a multi-deck blackjack table requires you to accurately determine how many cards are left in play.
EXAMPLE: If your run count is +8 and there are four tires left in the shoe, you divide your run count of eight by the four remaining tires, resulting in a correct count of +2 (8 ÷ 4 = 2).
How To Count Cards, Explained
If your calculation ends in a decimal number like +3.25 or +3.50, always play the hand as if the correct number is +3 and -3 for a negative number. Never round your decimals! This will limit your risk exposure and prevent you from betting big too soon if the correct number is not correct.
There are ways you can use the Hi-Lo card counting system to deviate from basic blackjack strategy. These moves help you vary your play, especially in multi-deck games where the ‘Surrender’ option is available to players.
There are four true counting variations known as the Fab Four. These variations were developed by blackjack pro Don Schlesinger, who was looking for ways to improve his winnings where surrender was an option.
Schlesinger has also developed 18 additional variations to the basic blackjack strategy, which are considered by experts to help execute “perfect play”.
Steps To Counting Cards Without Using Negative Numbers

If you can’t handle the mental arithmetic required to master hi-lo card counting, there is an alternative. An unbalanced card counting system does not return to zero at the end of a 52 card deck.
As a result, players of unbalanced card counting systems do not need to convert their running count to a true count. Here are some of the most common unbalanced systems:

Blackjack Card Counting
The system is unbalanced, as the sum of all low cards is +8 for each deck, while the sum of all high value cards is -6, resulting in a +2 imbalance.
With this strategy, you start your count at +18 when the decks are shuffled. If you see a 4 or a 5, add one to your count and subtract one from your count each time a 10 or black ace is dealt.
To use this system, your count starts at -2 times the number of active decks. If you are playing a six-deck game of blackjack, you should start at -12. If the running count reaches zero or a positive number, you have an advantage and should increase your bet.
Why red seven? The logic of counting red sevens as +1 is to create an imbalance in the system. Under this card counting strategy, you count black sevens as neutral. Since there are an equal number of red and black sevens, this strategy creates an imbalance in the score. From this you can figure out the correct number without the need for complex math.
Single Deck Blackjack Strategy
Although card counting is not illegal, casinos do not like players who do it. Casinos spend a lot of energy placing card counters, banning them and making sure they don’t come back.
These are the common opposites of card counting used by land-based casinos. You can look after them at the blackjack tables:
Most land-based casinos will counter the threat of card counting by shuffling their decks more often, especially after players raise their bets. In some ways, casinos are hurting themselves with this card counter, as more scratch reduces the number of hands played per hour.
The point at which the cards are shuffled is known as deck penetration. If the dealer shuffles after 36 cards have been used from a single stack, this represents 70% deck penetration. Casinos will often have fixed percentages, such as 50%. However, this can change based on how the players bet and if the card counting is suspect.
