If you leave the airport road 3.5 km north of Sylhet city, you can enjoy the pleasant feeling that comes from a walk in a tea garden. There are long rows of low plants stretching up the hills and down into the valleys. Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, which will become Bangladesh’s eighth Test venue, is located on a tea estate. Take a slight left after entering the main gate and you will see the slope of Lakkatura tea plantations just in front of the stadium enclosure wall. Tea plantations are quiet places devoid of drama. Keep going for about ten minutes and you will reach the media center. The press box offers a panoramic view of the ground. To the west is the famous green gallery, the only hill within a stadium in Bangladesh. The gallery has a no abandonment policy and during BPL 2018 the crowd was well behaved and adhered to the rule. The tiled roof over the pavilion and VIP seating add to the allure of the stadium, giving it an old-timey feel. However, the east side is almost entirely taken up by a more modern gallery, the upper floor of which has an extended shadow. There are also two small uncovered stands at the diagonal ends of the pitch which have the giant screen and scoreboard. The playing area is quite large and this meant that the strings were pulled considerably from the media center end during the BPL. Near the border ropes there are four driving ranges that can be the media center. The place was discovered quite by accident. BCB director Ahmed Sajjadul Alam was instructed by the council to search for a suitable cricket venue in Sylhet in 2007. Alam found the existing district stadium in the city to be run down and not up to international cricket standards. During a chance meeting with Aminul Islam Khan, secretary of the National Sports Council at the time, Alam learned of a stadium on the outskirts of the city of Sylhet that was almost complete but not purpose-built: ‘It was just a basic circular stadium with pavilions and grandstands, built in the middle of the Lakkatura tea garden. I had gone during a national international series, so I brought someone from the broadcasting company with me to assess the venue. The stadium at that time needed a separate media center to house the cameramen and press room, but for the everything else was almost ready.” I was reporting to the board and domestic matches started over the next 12 months. We usually look for international venues in places where there is a lot of interest in cricket and where cities are well developed. Good hotels are a must, and even the Rose View Hotel, where the teams stay these days, was built around the same time we went to see the stadium. It was a nice coincidence.”
The venue saw first-class cricket in 2008 and also hosted two England Lions one-day matches in 2012. There was a 12-month renovation break before the 2014 World T20 when a total of 18 men’s and women’s matches were played at the stadium. First-class matches have been played here regularly since 2016, and the ground also became home to the BPL in 2017 before finally hosting an international match earlier this year, considered the premier event for any stadium in the country. Sylhet Sixers won their first three home games during the BPL, but there was little local representation on their teams. They chose only Abul Hasan, the bowler who has been in and out of the national team, and Nabil Samad, an experienced local cricketer, in their team. This year, the Sixers brought all Sylhet natives Nabil, Ebadot Hossain, Alok Kapali and Jacker Ali to their squad for 2019. The current Bangladesh squad is also quite underrepresented, but the inclusion of Khaled Ahmed, with Abu Jayed already confirmed, means there are more players from Sylhet than any senior team in over 10 years. But between late 90s and 2010s, there were players like Hasibul Hossain, Kapali, Tapash Baisya, Rajin Saleh, Enamul Haque Jr. and Nazmul Hossain representing Bangladesh. Rajin, the compact first-rate batsman, even once led Bangladesh during the 2004 Champions Trophy after regular skipper Habibul Bashar was ruled out with a finger injury. It is sometimes believed that Kapali, an elegant mid-level hitter, underestimated his talent. He got Bangladesh’s first Test hat-trick against Pakistan in 2003. Stout Tapash led the Bangladesh bowling attack, especially when Mashrafe Mortaza was frequently injured in the 2000s. Enamul burst onto the scene as a 19-year-old left-arm spinner who led Bangladesh to their first Test win in 2005 against Zimbabwe. His 18 wickets in that run was Bangladesh’s record for 11 years before Mehidi Hasan batted it against England in 2016. Nazmul, an accomplished bowler, lost more matches than he played in eight years for Bangladesh. His two Test appearances were seven years apart, during which time he played 33 ODIs. Abul became the first Sylhet player in nine years to make his debut for Bangladesh, but his international career has been difficult. However, Sylhet as a test site is unlikely to encounter any difficulties. Given the city’s popularity as a tourist destination, the BCB will find the idea of hosting multiple matches there appealing, especially as the region also has a BPL franchise. But whatever the future holds, the fact that Test cricket is coming to their doorstep is a proud moment for the region’s cricket community. Sylhet International Cricket Stadium also known as Sylhet Stadium is one of the largest and most popular stadiums in Bangladesh.
Parvej Husen Talukder: Sylhet International Cricket Stadium
Recently established in 2007, Sylhet International Cricket Stadium has a capacity of approximately 18,500 spectators.
It is one of the few stadiums in Bangladesh which has a green gallery and hosts T20I, ODI and Test matches.
The first international match played at this stadium was a T20 international between Ireland and Zimbabwe in March 2014. The Irish won the match by three wickets.
This venue also hosted matches during the 2014 Men’s T20 World Cup and 2014 Women’s T20 World Cup and is one of the main pitches used during the Bangladesh Premier League.
Training Camp Indicates Sylhet’s Growing Prominence
A beautiful and picturesque stadium surrounded by hills and with a panoramic view, it is home to the Bangladesh Cricket Team on the international stage, the Sylhet Division Cricket Team in the Bangladesh National League and the Sylhet Strikers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
This venue also hosted the 2022 Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup and has witnessed some amazing cricket performances over the years.
