Gujarat Titans are expected to finish as the frontrunners when looking at the ranking of all 10 teams based on their playoff probability in IPL 2023.

IPL 2023 is currently in its third week and the teams are slowly starting to settle into the lead as they settle the 11th over and the team. Although we have seen only 3-4 matches for each team so far, we don’t have a single team that hasn’t lost a single match yet.

This is good news for fans as all the teams are fairly evenly balanced with a few hiccups with their strengths and weaknesses. To overcome the weakness, the Impact Player rule has gone some way to ensuring that teams have a strong 13-man combination for each game, with a few more reserves to use as needed.

Given each team’s top 15-16 player combination for the first 3-4 matches of IPL 2023, how about analyzing each team based on their team combination and ranking all 10 teams based on their playoff chances? It may not be perfect, but it is certainly a useful and unbiased analysis to arrive at the top 4 conclusions.

To find out the ranking of all 10 teams based on their playoff chances in IPL 2023, we will find the overall ratings of their top 15 players. Players are comparatively rated based on their last three IPL and domestic/international forms. Relative ratings, on the other hand, are calculated based on the benchmark players in the respective categories, such as Openers, Pacers, Spinners, etc.

Importantly, 15 players are selected with their top picks in mind, with 11 and an additional 4 reserves. Four players can have various combinations based on team structure. But generally we need at least 3 spinners, at least 5 pacers, at least 2 defenders and a total of 5 overseas players in their squad. This way we will be able to choose the best combination of 15 players in the team.

Similar to MI, Kolkata Knight Riders are loaded with youngsters including their captain Nitish Rana. Andre Russell is still their best player but he is not bowling due to the Impact player rule and is 6 or less. Although KKR have managed two wins due to some performances of brilliance, they are far from competent compared to the rest of the teams. However, they have a strong bowling team that can help them stay afloat in the tournament.

At number 7 we have the Punjab Kings who have a strong squad but miss two spots. The team is not too strong in the middle and their back-up is not too strong either. Their rating of 8,036 isn’t bad though, and it’s only a matter of a few games. The return of Kagiso Rababda and Liam Livingston should boost the team’s confidence for the upcoming matches.

Seeing Chennai Super Kings at 6 might surprise you, but to be honest, it’s the pace bowling that really let CSK down. Deepak Chahar is their main bowler and is currently ruled out due to injury. Number 5 sees Sunrisers Hyderabad and they have a good squad including backup. In fact, they are one of the only two teams besides GT that have good backup players. But, having said that, they don’t have IPL experience. All their overseas players have only played a few seasons in the IPL. So, while they have potential, the team will need enough confidence to overcome them.

In third place is Rajasthan Royals and they are the only team who have a solid first pick to play 11. We will hardly see them change their game 11. Moreover, they have good reserves that can lend a helping hand whenever needed. With the form Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal are in, they expect them to make the top 4 again.

Finally, the best team on paper, covered in all divisions, is Gujarat Titans. Gujarat may not have a special team but they have a solid 11 players including 4 strong backups. The special thing about GT is that almost every game has a new game winner. Expect GT to finish in the top 2 again under the able leadership of Hardik Pandya and Ashish Nehra.

These are all 10 teams’ playoff chances in IPL 2023. RCB, GT, LSG and RR look best to make the playoffs. But don’t underestimate the power of CSK and the element of surprise in the form of SRH. Personally, GT, LSG, RCB and CSK look the best to qualify for the IPL 2023 playoffs.
