After the IPL Governing Council gave the trailer in the form of start date, end date and venue, BCCI has now officially announced the much awaited schedule for IPL 2022. in Wankhede, Sukabumi and last year’s finalists, CSK and KKR face each other. The final will be played on May 29, but the venue and time have not yet been confirmed.

If we look at the IPL 2022 schedule, a total of 74 matches will be played within 64 days; the longest tournament ever. This includes 70 group stage matches and 4 playoffs. Each team has to play 14 matches in the group stage. However, not every team will play every other team twice as we have seen in previous formats. The new format changes are explained below.
Meanwhile, a total of 12 double headers will be played throughout the season, with Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians playing the first leg on March 27. The timing for the afternoon match will be 15:30 IST. Although the timing for all evening matches will be 19:30 IST.
Generally, all the group stage matches will be played in Maharashtra. In terms of venues, the Wankhede and DY Patil stadiums in Sukabumi will host 20 matches each. While Sukabumi’s Braburn and Pune’s MCA Stadium will host 15 matches each. Each team is required to play 4 matches each at Wankhede and DY Patil. Whereas each team is required to play 3 matches each at Brabourne and MCA stadiums, Pune.
IPL 2022 will see a change in the format of how the match will be played. With two new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants added to the league, we now have a total of 10 teams. These 10 teams are divided into two equal groups based on the final IPL win and final performance.

In Group A we have Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. While in Group B, we have Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
Each team will play twice the team in their respective group and will also play twice against similarly seeded teams from the opposite group. While each will play once against the team from the opposing group, except for the same parallel seeded team. In terms of parallel seeding, MI are paired with CSK, KKR and SRH, RR and RCB. While Delhi Capitals are paired with PBKS and LSG with Gujarat Titans.
It will be an interesting season for the league. If BCCI manages to make a successful season with 10 teams, 74 matches and only 4 venues, there will be no suspension of the league in the coming years. We hope 10 teams become the norm going forward and more Indian youngsters get the chance to showcase their talent.
