IPL Chairman 2023 – IPL chairman Arun Dhumal: Plans to introduce home and away format in WPL from second season Buoyed by the success of the inaugural IPL women’s super league president Arun Dhumal on Tuesday said plans to introduce a home and away format from season two, but the number of teams will remain five over the next three years.

IPL chairman Aaron Domal said on Tuesday that they plan to introduce a home-and-away format from season two, but the number of teams will remain five over the next three years.

The first ever WPL tournament proved to be a huge success among fans and players, but as the tournament was played under tight schedules and right after the Women’s T20 World Cup, the BCCI decided to organize all the matches at two venues in Mumbai.

Describing hosting the WPL as the biggest challenge of his tenure, Dumal said that having home and away matches greatly helps teams build a fan base and the board wants to take that route early next season. “A good start is half done. It was a great start for the WPL and going forward it will be much better than what we have seen so far. We started with five teams, but going forward there is room for one more given the group of players, that will come in the following years.

“We hope to increase the number of teams, but for the next three seasons it will remain five. We will certainly look at the home and away format, we will see the available space given India’s international commitment and we will be called up.

“From a fan interaction point of view, it is very important that we choose the format both home and away,” Dumal told PTI.

Fans turned out in droves to watch the matches at Brabourne and DY Patel Stadium. The event generated huge interest even before the first ball was bowled, with team rights bringing BCCI close to ₹ 4,700 crore and media rights ₹ 951 crore.

“It’s been an exceptional journey so far and very difficult considering the period we’ve had to start the WPL. We’re happy with the way things have progressed, we didn’t have too many windows because the WC was there and the girls only had a week to come back and start.

“Everything (media rights, team rights, player auction) happened one after the other, but the way the tournament was received was exceptional,” Dumal said.

One of the reasons why a sixth team was not immediately introduced could be a lack of quality home-grown talent. The world’s best players showed their exemplary skills in the competition, but with the exception of Saika Ishaque, Kanika Ahuja and Shreyanka Patil, not many uncertified Indian players were able to catch the eye.

“Our national team has performed well over the last two years. The U19 girls have won the World Cup. Looking at how the WPL has been received, we are very hopeful that we will get a bigger group of players and that their fitness and fieldwork level will improve a lot in the future.” Three out of the five teams are owned by long-time IPL franchisees, who have seen the value of the men’s league reach astronomical proportions.

“As for the draw, those who have invested their money, they have plans ready. Our plan is to make money and reinvest it in the game and get a bigger and better pool of players for India.” Dumal said it is also important to give players from partner nations a chance in the WPL. American Tara Norris played her role in the initial version.

Teams can select up to five players from abroad in the eleven matches, but the fifth must be from an associate country.

“This is a global event. It is not India-centric. We have made one slot available for the associate countries which will help the game grow globally. And their players have also done well.”

The two-month IPL kicked off last week after a record media rights deal fetched the board a staggering Rs 48,390 crore. The painting sold TV and digital rights separately for the first time, and it proved to be a huge hit.

Television rights holder Najma and digital rights holder Viacom compete to provide fans with an enhanced viewing experience.

“The game has to be innovative for everyone. Everything in the game has to be about the fans. The idea was to make it more enriching for the fans. We had a different set of auctions (for media rights), we have two great partners.

“There is a need to capture a lot of markets in terms of a global audience. We want to reach the audience globally,” Dumal said.

Given the digital revolution happening in India and around the world, will television still be relevant? “Digital technology is changing the landscape so there will be more digital TV receivers, but given the depth and reach of TV, it still has a huge market in India,” he added.

Dumal added that the introduction of the impact player in the IPL and the teams being selected after the toss was done to reduce the draw advantage.

We have seen that dew plays a big role. Winning the draw is seen as an advantage and to mitigate that we thought of introducing an ‘Impact Player’ and giving teams a chance to pick teams after the draw so they can pick the right eleven.” 2020 and 2021 Due Covid-19 pandemic, it was business as usual in the 2023 season with home and away matches and packed exhibitions

The Indian Premier League’s (IPL) return to home and away avatar – across 12 venues due to an increase in teams – has been a massive success in terms of fan engagement, according to a senior league official.

After a spotty run through the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a limited number of venues as a precaution last year (three venues in Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad), it was business as usual in the 2023 season with two new entries – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. They play all their home matches in Ahmedabad and Lucknow respectively.

“The advent of back-to-back matches after three years, the competitive nature of cricket where we only had one qualifier until the final two days of league matches, combined to ensure unprecedented fan participation – both across all venues and on the digital front,” commented Arun Singh Domal, who was named IPL president last year.

Over the phone, Dumal felt it was a litmus test for the popularity of the catchy league despite its success story in the past 15 editions. “This was the first copy after we split the media rights into two parts – TV and digital rights and successful bids increased tremendously.” Although the final numbers are yet to come, the stakeholders are very happy as they see it as a long-term investment,” said Dumal, former BCCI treasurer.

Incidentally, the IPL raised an astronomical $6.2 billion for the five-year cycle from 2023-27 for media rights during an online auction last June – making it the league’s second-highest-grossing franchise globally after American Football (NFL). The IPL is valued per match this season at ₹1,180.2 million ($15.1 million), which is lower than the NFL but marginally higher than the English Premier League.

Looking at the roadmap for the IPL, the chairman said that they will follow this year’s model and also focus on developing the FA Women’s Premier League that was introduced this year. Brushing aside suggestions from some quarters that the bigger IPL could eventually see two seasons, Dumal said: “There are no such plans yet. The ICC’s dual calendar, along with their events, is choc-a-bloc, and we have asked From the global governing body for the current window so that all boards can start their leading players.”

The current format, which sees a total of 74 matches, will also follow next season before the BCCI moves to more matches. For 74 games, the teams play home and away, but not all of them play each other twice, but we will keep it according to our agreement with the media rights holders in 2024. In the third year of a cycle, we will look to increase the number of games and take that from there,” he revealed.

While the IPL’s organizational competence helped them weather the recent pandemic, Doumal felt they owed it to the thousands of workers on board.
