Sidhu led the Punjab Ranji team in the 1990s and in one of the matches it was decided in a team meeting that Punjab would bat first if they won the toss as the pitch was expected to rotate in the last two days. The team felt that the grass on the field would not last long and would only help the seamstresses for an hour or two and thus moving forward was the best option. However, captain Sidhu decided otherwise and did not even tell his team that the decision was made by him. This was revealed only on the second day of the match when the batsmen of the opposing team were enjoying the calm nature of the wicket and one of the Punjab fielders complained about missing the toss. He was confused when told that his captain Sidhu had won the toss! Of course, Sidhu conceded that the opposing team won the toss and decided to bat first! (This was apparently done to prevent two young runs of the opponent from meeting on a grass field on the first morning!). Perhaps some of these anecdotes from his playing days show that Sidhu has always been a master of U-turns and has always hurt his own team.
“Politics is not a bad profession, if you succeed there are rewards, if you fail you can always write the book,” this is one of Sidhu’s oft-repeated quotes. As a cricketer, Sidhu has never written a book, but it is not too late if he decides to do so now as a politician, because he has a lot to say and to say to his fans and voters after a history in many U-moves in cricket as well as in the field of politics.
