The inaugural edition of the Cricket World Cup was held in England in June 1975. In fact, the first three editions of the Cricket World Cup were held in England before the tournament was held under a private rotation system from the 1987 edition. About 14 members of the ICC have hosted at least one match of the marquee event since the tournament began.
From 1975 to 1983, the match consisted of 60 overs per innings before it was reduced to 50 overs per innings in 1987.

It was perhaps the most underrated final of the ODI Cricket World Cup. And in the end, literally nothing can separate England and New Zealand. In the first phase of this phase, the scores were tied at the end of 50 overs with England scoring exactly the 241 that New Zealand had previously set. From there to second for the first time, winning in the World Cup finals. Even that was not enough to have a decisive winner as both teams finished with 15 runs in six balls. But it was England who were crowned champions because of the number of runs they scored – 26 to New Zealand’s 17.

The method of determining the winner by the number of overs scored can be controversial – for example, it could be argued that wickets taken in excess of six or four should count – but in this tournament it was the rule. Further, this decision was taken after the super super option was exhausted. Yes, it was an unusual way to beat England, but it was much better than deciding the winner, say tossing a coin.
The game itself was intense and ebbed and flowed throughout. New Zealand did well to put a competitive total on the board given the smart fielding. Meanwhile, England had a turbulent start to the second innings, but the Kiwis bounced back and pulled away from the English wickets. In the end, it was a 110-run partnership between Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler that steadied the English ship and set the stage for a dramatic finish. True, the final result was too much for New Zealand – they lost on a technicality – but England deserve full credit. They played aggressive cricket throughout the World Cup and had the depth in their squad to cover all the bases. Hopefully, this will revive the popularity of cricket in the UK, where the game originated.
