Before I broke the 100 mile record, I was bowling at 157-158 kmph but I could not reach 160. I wondered why it wasn’t happening,” he said.
The former Pakistan cricketer revealed details of his training which included pulling vehicles and trucks at night before practicing on a 26-yard pitch and bowling with old and worn balls.
“I started running with tires but soon realized they were too low. Next, I started pulling small vehicles on my shoulders. Islamabad is less public so I used to pull vehicles at night. I used to match his pace with my running pace. Knowing that the vehicle was also small, a lorry started towing it. I pulled a truck 4-5 miles.
“When I was bowling inside the 26-yard line, my speed dropped to 142-143 kmph. But my goal was to hit 150 km/h on a 26-yard surface. By then my muscles were in good shape and I started bowling with an old, worn out ball. I aim to hit wickets with that old ball.

“I slowly returned to bowling with a relatively new ball. I was playing with the body mechanics. This process lasted for two months and I started to reach 150 kmph.
Akhtar revealed that when the 2003 World Cup came around, he was so confident that he could break that record that he even told his teammates, who panicked after facing him in the nets.
“When I was bowling in the Nets in 2003, the batsmen told me – ‘You are killing us, you are bowling too fast. What did you do to increase your speed so much?’ I told them I worked really hard because I wanted to break the 100 mile barrier.
“I told my teammates Saqlain (Mushtaq) and Azhar (Mahmood) that I will break records in the World Cup,” he said.

“After I hit 161.3 kmph I felt I could bowl faster. But then I started getting cracks in my body – in my back, in my pelvis. I thought I would be broke and out of the World Cup, so I left it there.”
