Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has expressed his support for Indian cricket and called online abuse of players a “disgrace”. After India’s loss to New Zealand on Sunday, which saw the Men in Blue slump to their second consecutive defeat, the Indian team was criticized on social media for their performance. Even coach Ravi Shastri and mentor MS Dhoni were not spared.

When Mohammad Shami fell victim to online abuse after India’s defeat against Pakistan, Amir urged fans to support the Indian team and said that for him, Team India is still the ‘best’ side out there.

“I still believe India is the best team, it’s just a matter of having fun or being bad, but abusing the players and their families is a shame, remember at the end of the day it’s just a game of cricket,” tweeted Amir.

Aamir was recently in the news for his Twitter spat with veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh. What started as banter between Amir and Harbhajan took an ugly turn when the former Pakistan spinner shared a video of Shahid Afridi hitting the spinner hard during an India-Pakistan Test match in 2006, which did not sit well with Harbhajan.

When things turned sour, Balhajan brought up Amir’s infamous fixing scandal in 2010, taking a swipe at the former Pakistan pacer when the 29-year-old used abusive language towards the spinner. The episode didn’t end there as Harbhajan, after repeated tweets at Amir, went live on Sports Tak and launched a no-holds-barred left-handed attack where he accused Amir of disrespecting senior professionals.

Hales earned a late recall to the England squad when injury and fitness hit Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy, and it proved a successful twist of fate for the new world champions. No one has scored more runs in the BBL in the last three seasons than Hales, who made crucial knocks in wins over Sri Lanka and New Zealand, then a special in the semi-final against India.

The England captain caught more balls than any goalkeeper in the tournament and finished fourth in the goalscoring table. Even after the rain-damaged loss to Ireland, Buttler maintained a calm attitude as a leader and then promptly hit a match-winning 73 against New Zealand. In the semi-final, his 80 combined with Hales led England to the decider, where his blistering 6 off Naseem Shah’s 26 for Momentum highlighted his fearless approach as he set his team on course for victory.

The Indian talisman opened the tournament with 82 not out to guide his team home against Pakistan and his strong form continued throughout. The tournament’s top scorer, Kohli, was the rock around which India built their success, although he was criticized for his relatively complex semi-final against England in Adelaide, which he ultimately lost.

The ‘NEBA’ phenomenon has come to the fore during this World Cup thanks to a series of dazzling displays from the 32-year-old right-back. Three half-centuries, all at blistering pace, made Yadav one of the tournament’s most consistent performers as well as one of its most lively and devastating, with his 360-degree strokeplay drawing fierce comparisons with the legendary AB de Villiers.

The largely unknown Phillips scored more than half his runs in his incredible save against Sri Lanka, but it was the century that effectively pushed the Kiwis into the semi-finals. Against England, the 25-year-old right-hander was once again the star of his side, smashing 62 off 36 with distinction to underline his status as a genuine T20 star. He also took possibly the catch of the tournament (see above).

Heralded as one to watch ahead of the qualifiers, Sikander Raza scored immediately with a scintillating 82 in Zimbabwe’s opening win over Ireland. And while his batting has been up and down – notably a lack of big performances against a top nation – his bowling has been a constant threat, and never more so than in his side’s shock win over Pakistan, where he took man-of-the-match 3-25.

Pakistan’s leg-spinner enjoyed a good tournament as a regular threat with the ball, picking up wickets at a poor economic rate en route to the final. Even in the defeat to England, the joint-fifth wicket-taker of the tournament produced outstanding results, taking 1-20 from his four balls and making 20 from 14 balls, while his furious 52 from 22 balls against South Africa was one of the World Cup highs.

England’s inconspicuous left-hander enjoyed a fine World Cup until his side reached the final, the highlight to that point being a career-best 5-10 against Afghanistan. Curran took it to the next level in the decider, producing a man-of-the-match display with 3-12 and sealing the player of the tournament award in the process.

The left-most of our picks given that he has taken just three wickets into the tournament, Mustafizur Rahman gets the nod as a point difference from the rest of the fast bowlers. His accurate cutters and yorker mean he is an excellent option through the middle and then into the death alongside Curran. Only Nortier had a better economy rate for the tournament than the rubber-jointed Bangladeshi among bowlers who bowled at least 15 balls. Strong performances against South Africa, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands confirmed Mustafizur’s reputation as one of the most skilled T20 operators.

A tournament that ended in heartbreak and a possible recurrence of a knee injury was an uncomfortable conclusion for the game’s most exciting pitcher. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s knocks in the first innings of Pakistan’s matches against South Africa (caught by Quinton de Kock), in the semi-final against NZ (catching Finn Allen lbw) and the final against England (bowling Alex Hales) highlighted his unprecedented early delivery ability to the door A slow start to the tournament saw the left-hander go wicketless against India and Zimbabwe – perhaps it was a bit of a coincidence that Pakistan also failed to win. But with his side on the ropes, Shaheen took 11 scalps in the next five matches before limping off the MCG in Sunday’s final.

A key part of a South African side that looked set to finally shake up the white-ball tournament, Enrique Norteier cemented his status as one of the country’s liveries despite the Proteas falling short of expectations. Along with Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada, the right winger helped form a formidable trio. Four-wicket hauls against Bangladesh and Pakistan ensured he finished the Super 12 as the leading wicket-taker, while no player had a better economy rate in the tournament (minimum 15 balls). Australian fans will be eagerly awaiting the right-hander’s Test arc on these shores next month. Cricket has a long history in Africa and the sport is popular in many countries in the region.
