On top of the world is English pacer Sam Curran. He became the most expensive purchase in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when Punjab Kings bought him for Rs 18.50 crore in the mini auction on Friday. This will also mark his return to Punjab Kings, where he made his IPL debut in 2019.

“I didn’t sleep much last night, I was a bit excited and also nervous about how the auction was going to go. But yeah, absolutely overwhelmed and incredibly humbled to get what I did. I never had any expectations of getting it,” said the Curran on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Live – Auction Special’.
Curran, the player of the tournament at the T20 World Cup in Australia with 13 wickets, will join his England teammates Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow at Punjab Kings.
Talking about his return to the Punjab franchise, the 24-year-old pacer said, “Coming back to where it all started for me in the IPL with Punjab, where I made my debut four years ago. So going there seems to be fantastic and I’m looking forward to joining some of my English teammates as well.
Ipl 2023 Auction: List Of Teams Likely To Bid Big For Ben Stokes, Sam Curran And Cameron Green
After enjoying a successful World Cup with England, Curran is now hoping to justify his hefty price tag in IPL 2023.
“I know the stadium. I know Mohali very well, so obviously it’s an advantage to have some familiar teammates helping me. And yes, I feel confident going into this tournament where I’m from a fantastic World Cup coming up. And yes, it’s amazing, I’m just incredibly excited that it’s only a few months away until I get to India,” he signed off. England star Cameron Green and Ben Stokes walked away with ₹52.25 crore between them – 25 per cent of the total spending power in the room
It was more Rohit Shetty than Alfred Hitchcock – quite formulaic. The offering was fast, the action dramatic but with very little suspense. Everyone knew which player would hit the jackpot in the IPL mini auction in Kochi on Friday. And that’s exactly how it happened. An hour into the proceedings, the three newbies – Sam Curran, Cameron Green and Ben Stokes, by far the best in the auction, walked away with ₹52.25 crore between them – 25 per cent of the total spending power in the room.

Ipl 2023 Auction: Sam Curran
Curran’s value was the highest in IPL auction history – ₹ 18.5 crore, surpassing the previous highest price of ₹ 16.25 crore paid by Rajasthan Royals for Chris Morris in 2021. Punjab Kings (PBKS) bid one the other to pull the player of the recently concluded T20 World Cup series.
Fortune also smiled on the 24-year-old when his name appeared first of the top three in the second auction of the day.
“It’s nice to have Sam back. He’s world class,” PBKS co-owner Nes Wadia told reporters. “We had him earlier, then we lost him to Chennai for ₹7.2 crore. These things happen in these supplementary auctions. They are dynamic. You (the franchise) want to go after a certain player and become a player, you can take advantage.
Soon, Morris’ record bid would be pushed back to third place by another bidding war. This time for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. Delhi Capitals chief Ricky Ponting had recently given a classic TV moment by urging Australian coach Andrew McDonald to make him available for auction as he would follow him. Ponting’s Capitals did, but unfortunately, they ran out of cash.
T20wc To Ipl: How Performers Cashed In At The Auction
Mumbai Indians, who had lost the bidding war for Curran, went over the limit to bag Green for ₹17.50 crore.
“With Cam, we’ve been watching his performances for the last three years. He’s in the right age group. If you notice, we’ve been looking for a long time for players in the younger age group in the last two auctions – The term value. Green fits perfectly” , said Mumbai Indians owner Akash Ambani.
While Green is seen as one for the future, Ben Stokes has hit the ground running in the limited overs game with ODI wins and the T20 World Cup. He may have some unfinished business in the IPL and England’s charismatic Test captain will push hard for Chennai Super Kings.

Stokes tweeted a simple yellow card, embracing CSK colours, just bought for ₹16.25 crore. His reunion with MS Dhoni – the two played together for Rising Pune Super Giant – is likely to generate as much interest as the Mumbai Indians pairing of Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah. Stokes could also be a strong captaincy candidate after Dhoni.

The surplus extended to two more purchases – West Indies wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran and England’s up-and-coming hard batsman Harry Brook. Lucknow Super Giants already had an established keeper in Quinton de Kock, but they did not hold back while bidding to land the former WI captain for Rs. 16 crores. “We were looking for a finisher. And Pooran was the perfect fit,” explained LSG owner Shashwat Goenka.
Brook, fresh from his exploits in Pakistan where he reached three hundreds in his first Test series, was chased by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13.25 crore.
Sitting idly in the auction, watching opposing teams go crazy, can be irritating. But some teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, not fans dictated by the dynamics of the auction, said they don’t mind. “I jokingly told someone, it will be a spectator sport for us. We had done all the work beforehand,” Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore said.
Brook became the first specialist batsman to cross the ₹10 crore mark in auctions. Franchises may have gone so deep in bidding for an inexperienced, high-potential outfield batter because of the impact rule. “Instead of looking at an all-rounder, we can now look at replacing a bowler with a batsman. This gives us some flexibility in picking specialists for each slot,” SRH head coach Brian Lara said.

“It’s a good rule. I think the sport needs to evolve. It will create a lot of excitement,” said former player and IPL GC member Pragyan Ojha. “We had an over-under rule during my playing days.”
When the big names were called, it was good news for some smaller nations. Irish left-arm pacer Joshua Little became the first Irishman to be picked in the IPL auction when Gujarat Titans signed him for ₹4.4 crores. Experienced T20 freelancer from Namibia, who also previously represented South Africa, David Wiese has joined KKR.
Veteran spinners Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla have also found a crowd, both at their base price of ₹50 lakhs.
