Cricket Biz – South Africa’s opening batsman Reda Hendricks has been called up to the squad for the remaining two matches against Australia, following injuries to Thembu Bafuma and Heinrich Klassen, South Africa’s cricket team confirmed on Sunday (23 February).

Hendrix was part of the squad for both the ODI and T20I series against England earlier this month, but hasn’t won a single match in the latter, following Temba Bafuma’s steady return to top form. He was previously overlooked in the Australian series, but is now taking a look after injuries to Bafuma and Heinrich Klassen.

While Bafuma was recovering from a hamstring strain, which he sustained during the deciding match of the three-match series against England at the Centurion, Klassen suffered a right groin injury during the team’s warm-up ahead of the opening T20I series in Johannesburg. The second leg will be played in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Hendrix’s final T20I appearance came in the third T20I against India at Bengaluru in September 2019. He played with the bat in his team’s 3-0 sweep against Sri Lanka in February last year, amassing 139 runs from three matches.

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has opened up about the ongoing battle to play more red cricket as the three nations dominate the circuit due to their financial clout.

In recent years, Australia, England and India have played more Test matches than the rest of the ICC, greatly affecting the competition between South Africa and the West Indies, Pakistan and New Zealand, to name a few.

These three countries have an advantage when it comes to scheduling tours, as they dictate the terms given that they hold the bulk of the interest and therefore air revenue from broadcast rights.

As a result, the Proteas have seen their number of Test matches dwindle in recent times, making it difficult for them and others outside the ‘top three’ to compete in the ICC World Test Championship.

Bafuma, who spoke on Uhozi FM with Victor Molefe on Wednesday night, expressed his concern about the current state of affairs but agrees that they need to perform to raise their profile and end their dominance at the top.

“It’s a very sad situation. We all want to play a lot of Test cricket. Unfortunately, three nations have the power to decide,” Bafuma told Molefe.

“For us, we can just keep fighting, applying pressure by playing good cricket and winning our matches.”

Speaking of performances, the captain has often come under group scrutiny in limited overs formats, but maintains his focus is on continuing to do well for the national team.

“The pressure will always be there, people will always talk and my only focus is to keep doing well and getting better,” he said.

Bafuma enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 season, yielding four nominations for the upcoming South African Cricket Awards, having earlier captained the Proteas Test squad. Pooran, who was released by Hyderabad last year, returned to haunt his former team on Saturday and was particularly hard on part-time spinner Abhishek Sharma, hitting three big sixes in the 16th over to help Lucknow close to their target of 183.

Lucknow eventually crossed the line with four balls to spare and moved back into the top four on the table.

“I have to admit from the start of the season I wished Poran had faced more exaggeration, but it is to their credit that he got them a handful of games in this role. They stayed with him in that role.” Tell the bishop the site.

“He’s been trying to find a way to cut through the hyperbole and go deep and then finish games for a few years now. He hasn’t done it as often as he would have liked.

“He came into this role primarily as a finisher without having to get up and get going from the first ball. He seems to have freed him up a few times this season. He had a poor role in this game.

“But (coach) Andy Flute’s psychology of letting him take the first ball seems to be working in the team’s favour.”

Marcus Stoinis drove Sharma for a sixty-six and fell on Sharma’s third ball 16 to lead Pooran to the crease.
