ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Afghanistan and Pakistan are set to reignite their cricket rivalry by meeting in the first bilateral series in years.

The match will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the UAE at 19:00 (16:00 GMT) on Friday. This will be the first of three T20 International (T20I) matches between the two teams in the series, with the other two scheduled for March 26 and 27.

After the decision to rest regular captain Babar Azam, Pakistan will play under leg-spinner all-rounder Shadab Khan for the first time.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman are other notable absentees as Pakistan looks to field new talent to make an impact in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL), the country’s domestic T20 tournament.
“The uncapped players in our team have been invited due to their consistent performances in domestic cricket and impressive performances in the PSL,” Khan said ahead of the series.
Express fast bowler Ihsanullah, who took 22 wickets in the PSL and won the Man of the Tournament award, is expected to play against Pakistan.

Sam Ayub, who made a brave shot during the PSL, was also included in the new look team.
Afghanistan will be captained by leg-spinner Rashid Khan, while former captain Mohammad Nabi is also back in the squad.
The Afghanistan team is in good form after defeating the hosts UAE in the 3-match T20I series last month. Experienced batsmen Ibrahim Zadran and Karim Janat both scored fifties in the series.
They will also be joined by Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mujeeb ur Rehman and Fazlhaq Farooqui who have also featured in the PSL.

Currently ranked third in the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I rankings, Pakistan are playing their first international T20 match since last year’s T20 World Cup where they finished second.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said: “Following the appeal of the security services and the Afghan nation, the ACB has canceled all cricket match contracts with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The two teams have faced each other in multilateral tournaments like the World Cup or the Asia Cup and have now decided to take part in a bilateral series.
“We appreciate the willingness of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to play in Afghanistan in March,” ACB president Mirwais Ashraf said in a statement earlier this month. “This is a significant achievement for the two neighboring countries. We are optimistic and look forward to expanding our relationship with the PCB and continuing our excellent partnership and frequent cricket assignments with them, which will help us strengthen our team and our cricket. as a whole,” added former Afghanistan player Ashraf.

The PCB also welcomed the development, with its chairman Najam Sethi saying in a statement that the two countries share a “supportive relationship”.
“Afghan players are very popular in the Pakistan Super League. I am confident that the cricketers from both the sides will wear the national jersey and perform at the highest level for the upcoming international series and entertain the passionate and cricket loving crowd,” he said.
The teams have met a total of seven times, playing three T20Is and four ODIs in their rivalry, with Pakistan always coming out on top.
However, recent matches have seen heated arguments between supporters of both sets as well as players on the field.

The last encounter ended in an Asia Cup match in September 2022, with Pakistan securing a thrilling victory by just one wicket.
After tempers flared in the stands, the PCB announced it would file a complaint against the ICC over the “crowd problem”. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Asif Ali and Afghanistan’s Farid Ahmed have been fined by the ICC for brawling on the field.
There were similar scenes between the two in the 2021 T20 World Cup, which saw Pakistan score 24 runs to seal yet another dramatic victory.

Pakistan won their first one-day international series in 12 years, beating New Zealand by 26 runs in the third match in the southern port city of Karachi on Wednesday.
Imam-ul-Haq and captain Babar Azam scored 90 and 54 runs respectively as Pakistan were bowled out for 287 runs in the allotted 50 overs. It was Azam’s 26th ODI fifty.
But despite Tom Blundell (65) and debutant Cole McConchy putting on an impressive 45-ball 64, New Zealand were bowled out for 261 in 49.1 overs.

Fifteen runs later, Blundell was also out after failing to reach his crease trying to complete the second run. He hit seven fours in his match.
