Asli Cricket – Ashley Gardner is slowly establishing herself as one of the leading national figures in Australian sport, but a knee drop is not on the cards.

Winning the Baggy Green cap is a feat for any cricketer and only 634 Australians have received the highest honour. But three of them are of local origin.

Fortunately, this is not the case with powerful all-rounder Ashley Gardner, who is establishing herself as one of the most important local figures in Australian sport.

When 19-year-old Gardner made her national debut in February 2017, she became the first Indigenous woman to represent the Australian cricket team since Faith Thomas played her only Test in 1958.

Gardner established himself as a stalwart across all three formats and played a key role in Australia’s T20 World Cup triumph in March.

Gardner’s mother, a proud Muruwari woman, taught her children about their culture from an early age, but the cricket star has recently invested in learning the history of her people.

“I’m still not out of it,” Gardner said. “I really enjoy telling people about my background and it’s really amazing to connect with other family members and talk about all things cultural.

“It probably happened more in the last 12-18 months when I started wanting to learn more to help educate other people about certain issues.”

The now 23-year-old set up the Ash Gardner Foundation earlier this year, which aims to empower the Aboriginal community through education, sport and the arts.

By focusing on Aboriginal youth, the foundation hopes to boost school attendance and reduce dropouts to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

“My biggest dream for the foundation is to increase the rate of Aboriginal kids graduating because the rate is currently low and that’s something I think is very important,” Gardner said.

“I feel like with a really good education and stability, I can change that across generations, implementing a program that gives these kids a more positive outlook later in life.”

Undaunted by a potential backlash, many WBBL players and officials chose to kneel before all matches in the T20 tournament, but Gardner was unable to join the protest.

“Personally, I don’t want to do that,” Gardner said. “And why didn’t I do it and it didn’t make my team. I think they support my decision.

“Everybody is against racism if they’re decent people, but anything that kneels is more against institutional racism, which is why it was so popular in America at the time.

Instead, Gardner participated in the Nets Walk with many of his teammates before the WBBL tournament to celebrate the culture and recognize the indigenous people of the land.

Although only six cricketers of Indigenous heritage have represented Australia on the international stage, this number would grow in the coming decades.

According to Cricket Australia, the number of games played among the local population has grown significantly, from 8,000 in 2011/12 to 54,000 in 2016/17.

Gardner is one of five local athletes in the WBBL squad, along with Sydney Thunder young guns Hannah Darlington and Anika Learoyd.

“I spent the whole preseason with them,” Gardner said. “It’s very exciting to see some of the young local cricketers develop and to see them grow as people as well as cricketers.

“I’ve known them both since their teenage years playing at Nationals, so it’s been amazing to see them grow.”

The Sydney player’s iconic collection has attracted the attention of his peers, with the likes of Alyssa Healy and Mel Jones claiming commissions. And Gardner continued to develop his technique in the WBBL bubble, donning his cricket boots to showcase his style on the field.

“I had a few people who wanted their shoes ready,” Gardner said. “I ended up buying some crayons and I think I have seven or eight artists on board to wear these shoes.

“It’s pretty cool because there’s been good feedback from the players themselves, but also from the media.”

Cricket Australia on Wednesday revealed the home kit that the national men’s team will wear during the upcoming T20 series against India.

Australia’s women’s team donned a similar national kit during one of their short away matches against England last year, and their men’s counterparts followed suit.

“I think cricket is one of the most loved sports in Australia, especially the Australian men’s team, and it’s amazing that people are into it.”

The former AFL star’s problems with racism are well-documented, but Goodes has also committed himself to helping Indigenous youth, setting up the Go Foundation with Michael O’Loughlin in 2014.

“We covered all the bases,” Gardner said. “He had a pretty successful, similar, same-place experience to support ours.

“It was great to meet him, but to talk not only about the basics, but about sports and life in general, trying to find the best way to have a positive outlook on things outside of the exercise of sports life.”

Gardner was named Player of the Series during September’s T20 tri-series against New Zealand in Brisbane, but has struggled to translate that form into the WBBL.

After eight games, his debut half-century came against the Hobart Hurricanes, but he has not otherwise put together a double-figure score for the Sixers.

“Obviously it’s been a little bit inconsistent, which is really annoying because I feel really good going into this Big Shot,” Gardner said.

“But I guess that’s the beauty of cricket, it’s not always your day and you’re more likely to have bad days than good days.

“You really want to do what’s best for your team and that’s what I do when I go out and play for whoever I’m playing for.”

But he has taken on a new role with the ball this season, often called upon by Sixers captain Ellyse Perry to switch weapons at the death.

“It’s not something I’ve done in the past, especially because obviously the batsmen are trying to hit spinners at the back end,” Gardner said.

Still in the early stages of his professional career, Gardner has amassed 1125 runs and 64 wickets in international cricket.

“We’re moving in the right direction by trying to eliminate these issues, whether it’s related to culture or your sexual identity.

“I think cricket is going in the right direction and it’s really fun to be a part of it and have hope for something and show those positive messages going forward.”
