The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced the highly anticipated schedule for the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022). While the dates were roughly known, all the speculation surrounding the locations ended with the timeline revealing the same thing. The BCCI managed to hold the tournament in India after hosting the tournament in the United Arab Emirates for a season and a half.

The league phase of the tournament will be held across four venues in Maharashtra, while the playoff schedule is yet to be announced. The 15th edition will begin on March 26 with a clash between CSK and KKR. With the addition of two new teams, the total number of league matches increased from 56 to 70. As the number of matches increased, double headers became a regular occurrence.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule of all the league matches to be played in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on March 6.
Sponsored by the Tata Group, the 2022 edition of the IPL will feature a total of 70 league matches, which will be played from March 26 to May 22. The schedule for the four play-offs, which will be played after the end of the league phase, will be shared later, the BCCI said.

The final of the tournament will be played on May 29, but the details of when and where will be shared later by the nodal cricket body.
Most of the league stage matches – 20 each – were scheduled at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and the DY Patil Stadium in neighboring Navi Mumbai. Of the remaining 30 matches, 15 each will be played at the MCA International Stadium in Pune and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
The league stage had 70 matches scheduled over a period of 58 days. The first match will be between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. The last match of the league will be played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings.
“There will be a total of 12 double-headers with the first match starting at 3:30 PM IST. All evening matches will start at 7:30 PM IST,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

Each team will have to play at four venues during the league phase. Of the 56 league matches, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru will host 10 matches each while Ahmedabad and Delhi will host 8 matches each. One of the highlights of this edition of VIVO IPL is that all the matches will be played at neutral venues, no team will be playing at home. All teams will play at 4 out of 6 venues during the league phase.
A total of 11 double matches will be played in which 6 teams will play three matches in the afternoon and two teams will play two matches in the afternoon. The afternoon matches are scheduled to start at 3:30 PM IST, while the evening matches will begin at 7:30 PM IST.

Having safely and successfully hosted the tournament in the United Arab Emirates last year with all security protocols in place, the BCCI is confident of welcoming the IPL home with the health and safety of the players and everyone involved being paramount.
Tournament fixtures are mapped so that each team travels only three times during the league stage, minimizing travel and reducing risk. This year’s VIVO IPL will be played behind closed doors at home and spectators will be called for approval at a later stage of the tournament. The format of IPL 2023 remains the same as last year. A total of 74 matches including 4 playoff matches will be played in a period of 2 months. While each team will play a total of 14 group stage matches, not all teams will play other teams twice.
10 teams are drawn and divided into two groups. MI, Delhi Capitals, KKR, LSG and RR have been placed in Group A. While CSK, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, RCB and SRH have been placed in Group A. Teams from the same group will play each other once and teams from the other group will play each other twice.
Overall, IPL 2023 will see a total of 18 double headers. While 16 double-headers are on weekends, the other two double-headers are on Thursdays. For the double-header, the afternoon matches will start at 3:30 PM IST. While the evening matches will be played at 7.30 pm IST as usual.
In terms of venues, IPL 2023 will return to the same home and away format that we saw in 2019 and earlier. As usual, teams play 7 home games and 7 away games. However, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals will play some of their home games in Dharamshala and Guwahati respectively.
