Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, Indian players have been the top scorers overall with 4 of the top 5 names belonging to Indians. However, when it comes to Orange Cap, the data says something different. In the 16 years to 2023, the Orange Cap has been won 10 times by foreign players. While the Indian players have not had much success with only 6 Orange matches against their names.

But how about having a look at the highest number of runs scored by Indian players in any IPL year? This will help us to better communicate with Indian players, and will only make for a fair comparison. So, let’s have a look at the ranking of most runs scored by Indian players in each IPL year from 2008 to 2023.
For the simple understanding of the users, we are just going to list the most runs scored by the Indian players every year. So, we’ll only have one entry per year. For example, KL Rahul scored 659 runs in IPL 2018 but cannot be in this list because Rishabh Pant was selected with 684 runs for that year.
At No. 16 we have Suresh Raina from the 2009 season. Raina scored a hundred runs less than Gautam Gambhir’s 534 in 2008, but that is likely due to the wickets of a tougher African. Even if Suresh had problems against swing, he did well in 2009 scoring 434 runs with a good 31 but a good batting average of 140.9.
No. 15 sees Gautam Gambhir with a total of 498 runs in IPL 2017. It was Gauti’s penultimate year in the IPL, and he did not disappoint. Gauti was the second-highest player that year behind Warner’s 641. He scored a total of 498 runs from 16 innings at an average of 41.5, four points +50 to his name.

At number 14 we again have Gautam Gambhir, who was India’s star performer in the inaugural IPL in 2008. Gambhir scored an impressive 534 runs which puts him second in the orange cap list. Gambhir was 99 points ahead of the second-best Indian, Yusuf Pathan. Overall, Gambier hit 5 fifties that year, which was the best with Orange cap winner Shaun Marsh.
The year is 2015, and we have a new entrant in the most racing category with Ajinkya Rahane of Rajasthan Royals. The current 2023 release may be the best of all time, but Rahane burst into the spotlight with his impressive RR performance in 2015. Rahane scored 534 runs from 13 innings at a scintillating average of 49.1.
2011 belongs to Virat Kohli, who scored a total of 557 runs that season; 4 more than his idol, Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli scored just 307 points in 2010 before making a senior in 2011 totaling 557 points with an impressive average of 46.4. Kohli played RCP’s Gayle in most of the matches that year.

No. 11 once again belongs to Gautam Gambhir, who appears for the third time on this list. Gambhir, who was India’s leading run scorer in 2008, hit the top again in 2012. He scored an impressive 590 runs that season. 21 more than the second best Indian, Shikhar Dhawan. Gambier scored an impressive 6 fifties that season, one less than Gayle’s 7.

At No. 10 we have a new entrant in the form of KL Rahul. Undoubtedly, Mr. Rahul has scored an impressive 593 points in 2019 after scoring over 600 points in the previous season. Rahul was the second-best player in the season behind Warner, who scored 692 points. The special thing about Rahul is that he scored more than 50 scores in just 14 rounds that season.
No. 9 again sees KL Rahul, who scored 616 runs in the 2022 campaign. It was KL Rahul’s fifth consecutive year with more than 500 runs in an IPL season, making him the only player in IPL history to achieve the feat. Rahul with his 616 runs was 129 runs more than the second best Indian, Hardik Pandya.
No. 8 sees the avatar of the god of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. In the 2010 campaign, Sachin was not only the best performing Indian but also won an Orange cap with a total of 618 runs to his name. Tendulkar scored an impressive 618 runs from 15 innings at an average of 47.5 and a strike rate of 132.6 with five 50+ scores to his name.
2013 sees Virat Kohli break all records until 2012 for scoring the most goals by an Indian player in an IPL season up to that year. Kohli scored an impressive 634 innings from 16 innings pitched at an impressive average of 45.3 and an improved strike rate of 138.7. Kohli scored 6 fifties this season but couldn’t get his hundred with a top score of 99.

No. 6 sees a part-out in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who started the 2021 season as a non-CSK player but made his debut for India before the late second half of the season began. Ruturaj, winner of the IPL 2021 orange cap, has scored an impressive 635 runs from 16 innings with more than 50 hits to his name.
The year is 2014, and we have Robin Uthappa breaking Virat Kohli’s record for most runs scored in a single IPL season. Uthappa scored 660 points in 2014, helping his team KKR to a victorious campaign. Moreover, Uthappa in 2014 became only the second Indian player to win the Orange Cap, and the first Indian to win the Orange Cap while winning the IPL Trophy.
In fourth place we have KL Rahul, who appears for the third time on the list. In the closing year, KL Rahul was not only the best Indian player but also won the Orange Cap with a total of 670 runs to his name. KL took just 14 innings to score 670 runs batted in at an incredible 55.8 but a decent strikeout rate of 129.3. That year, KL scored 132 runs in the innings. Highest rated Indian player in IPL.

At number three, we have Rishabh Pant, who was an unbeatable beast in IPL 2018. Pant scored an astounding 684 runs from just 14 innings; That’s like scoring an average of 49 points per round. This is when it often hits 4 or less. An impressive performance earned Pant a 52.6 average and a 173.6 strikeout rate with eight 40+ points in the series.

In second place, we have this year’s Orange Cap holder, Shubman Gill. Gill almost duplicated what his idol did in 2016 striking out 890 runs from 16 innings pitched at an impressive 59.3 and a strike rate of 157.8. Gill has scored 4 fifties and 3 hundreds this season, including a consecutive hundred.
No. 1 on the list belongs to none other than G.O.A.T Virat Kohli who scored 973 runs in the 2016 edition of IPL. The record seems out of reach as long as players don’t play more than 17 matches. Kohli’s 973 home runs came from 16 innings at an incredible 81.8 and an impressive strike rate of 152.
