Then there were two people! Just then, we’re done with Qualifier 2, leaving only the Finals. In an intriguing tournament, we will finish as we started as Chennai take on Gujarat in the grand final on Sunday, May 28 in Ahmedabad. The first game of the season between these two teams was held at the same venue, perhaps a fitting end to the season. That game starts at 19:30 IST (2 PM GMT), but our preparations, as usual, start much earlier. So join us until then, take care and goodbye!
Shubman Gill is the Man of the Match for his stunning century. For him, he says, it’s all about ball-to-ball and keeping it ball-to-ball. Claims that when he hit 3 sixes in an over, he knew it was his day and he had to make the most of it. Mention that he is looking to continue training and developing as a cricketer, fielder and shooter. He thinks it will help when he has a good international season and says once it starts, he can keep going. Feeling changed after the West Indies tour and getting injured, he decided to make technical changes after the T20 World Cup leading up to this tour. He lets you know that when you’re off the ropes, expectations are a factor, but when you’re on the ground, he gives 100% and tries to maintain intensity throughout. He concluded by saying that this was his best appearance in the Indian T20 league so far.
Gujarat captain Hardik Pandya says that a lot of effort has gone into their victory and this is only a reflection of that. He points out that Gayle’s form has been amazing this year and that his knock in this game is one of the best he’s ever seen, and goes on to say that Gayle is a superstar and will do great things for the franchise and for India will do. Well, he adds, his job is simple and to keep the boys’ mindset positive. He says that when everything goes wrong, Rashid Khan steps in and does a great job. Mention that it has nothing to do with the result, they just want to play good cricket and are excited and happy for the boys.
Mohit Sharma, who bowled brilliantly, is ready for conversation. He says he is a bit lucky to get those wickets. Mention that it was slipping well and the opponents seemed to be on track at one stage with the way Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were batting, so they were worried. Explains that they didn’t want to test in front of Suryakumar Yadav and bowl balls even though they were going for sixes. Adds that after Suryakumar Yadav got out, they had more confidence to win. It ends by saying that they were assured of a final appearance only after the last wicket fell.

Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma says it was a great total from Gujarat and adds that Shubman Gill batted very well. Think they got 20-25 extra runs, but with their batting combination they were quite positive. Claims that Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav were fighting well in the middle but lost their way in the chase. They are claimed to have talked about batting well and being positive, but the powerplay did not go well as they lost a few wickets. Keeps saying they couldn’t keep going and Suryakumar Yadav kept them in the game well but needed someone to make it deeper. Credit to Gujarat for playing well. Answering a question about Ishan Kishan, he says that it was a shock and last minute changes are not ideal but as a team they have to adapt to different conditions. He mentions that he doesn’t want to watch it and that they didn’t play well enough to win the game. It shows that there have been positives such as playing in the qualifiers and finishing third in a tournament along with hitting. He adds that the new players have performed well and can do so next season to see what they can do with the team. Lets know that all the bowling teams have been challenged and bowled brilliantly last time but credit goes to Shubman Gill and he hopes to continue this form. In the end he says that the team had a role during the season and where he bats, but Vishnu took the chance that he is a good player so they don’t want to see a misjudgment because Gujarat came out on top.
Early in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and put Gujarat on a wicket that was under cover for some time. Gujarat got off to a steady start with the bat, but lost Wriddhiman Saha shortly after the powerplay. What followed was a thrilling 138-run stand between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarsaran that put the hosts in command. Gill scored his third hundred in the last 4 innings and finished with 129 runs, the highest individual score of the season. Sudarsan also batted well and Hardik Pandya ended the innings with a flourish. For Mumbai, there wasn’t much to talk about in their bowling except for Jason Behrendorff, who bowled a very economical spell and Kumar Kartikeya also did well in the two overs he bowled. Coming into the chase, the first half was up and down, but in the second half of the chase, Gujarat had the bowling skills and managed to disrupt Mumbai’s runs completely.
Mumbai’s brilliant run comes to an end as they fail to reach Qualifier 2 and miss out on the Grand Final. Chasing 234 runs, Mumbai faced problems and had to use Impact Player Nehal Wadhera at the top of the order. Neither he nor Rohit Sharma made it, and even Cameron Greene took a hit around the left elbow that forced him to retire. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav built a strong stand, but just when Varma was at his best, he got out. Yadav was walking on one side and Green came back to bat and gave Yadav some support. However, as soon as the ball changed, Mumbai started self-destructing with the bat. They went from 155 for 5 to 162 for 9 at one point and were all but finished with the team of David and Vishnu Vinod failing to fire.

Back-to-back finals for Gujarat! What a remarkable performance from the home team and Gujarat has done for Mumbai, the same thing Mumbai did against Lucknow and just got the win. Gujarat had a huge total on the board thanks to a masterclass from Shubman Gill up top. And then Mohammad Shami gave them a great start with the ball with some early wickets. From there they went up for a couple of runs, but on the last ball of the powerplay, Rashid Khan ran away from Tilak Verma, who was on fire till then. They didn’t get many wickets in the middle order, but when Joshua Little and Mohit Sharma came in, things changed. Little applied the pressure and took a wicket, but it was Sharma who bowled a brilliant spell and finished with five wickets, including the valuable wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. In the end, Gujarat just had too many runs on the board and won the game easily.
