More than three and a half years have passed since Steve Smith’s captaincy of the Australian men’s Test team came to a standstill. A fair amount has happened since then – enough that the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town that cost Smith his job as if it was another time.

While Smith’s authority among players is unquestionable, it is his acceptance by fans and the public that is particularly noteworthy. The anger and frustration of the Australian public is the main reason behind the harsher punishment than usual for the alleged ball.

The question now about Smith’s leadership is: What did he learn from his fall from grace? Where is he to avoid more trouble? Is it just a step back from ‘win at all costs’ to ‘win at most costs’? Or is it a general lesson in leadership – about doing the right thing, even if it’s not comfortable? Is he ready to contribute to a new era of Australian men’s cricket, where integrity and accountability are more than slogans on the wall of the changing room?

It’s a difficult situation to navigate, especially considering Cummins’ idea that Smith will play a “senior manager” role and that the pair will collaborate more than traditional leadership styles. It is a way of growth from Cummins, who may have chosen to go his own way and ensure his hold on the captaincy. That he has no interest in him speaks volumes for his suitability for the role. But for Smith, this high responsibility means more scrutiny of his integrity and it remains to be seen how he will do with it.
