After a brief silence after his name was announced, Dhawan attracted initial attention from Rajasthan Royals. After a tender between the Kings and the Capitals, the Punjab Kings have also shown interest in the 36-year-old.
The Royals were auctioned after $50 million, and there were significant clues about the Royals’ interest in Dhawan. After several other tenders, Dhawan was finally snapped up by Punjab for INR 8.25 crore.
Making his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils (not Capitals), Dhawan has represented Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the world’s biggest T20 league.
In 191 IPL innings, Dhawan scored 5,784 runs at an average of 34.84 and a strike rate of 126.64, making him the second highest run-scorer in the IPL. The left-handed batsman has two IPL centuries and 44 half-centuries to his name.

Memories of his first cricket match date back to 2002 when former India captain Sourav Ganguly waved his jersey from a balcony at Historic Road. The 8-year-old was an instant admirer of both Ganguly and the sport. His optimism awaits the day Punjab Kings win the Indian Premier League title. When I’m not watching cricket matches, I usually watch Punjabi movies at the cinema. Shikhar Dhawan is one of the best backball openers of the last decade, one of the few players to have played every season for India. The Premier League (IPL) has been around since its inception in 2008.
Dhawan started his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils at that time and played alongside international stars like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Glenn McGrath and AB de Villiers. The southpaw started his IPL career well and scored 340 runs @ 37.77/115.25 with 4 50+ scores.
However, disaster struck the following year when Delhi traded Shikhar to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2009. It was a disastrous move for the left-hander as he managed just 231 runs in 14 innings in the next two matches.

Disappointed by their dismal earnings, Dhawan decided to move to Deccan Chargers in 2011, where his fortunes changed. He scored over 400 points in the following seasons, which made him a mainstay in a struggling hitting unit.
So when Deccan Chargers were replaced by SunRisers Hyderabad on Sun Tv in 2013, it is no surprise that Dhawan was the de facto choice of the newly formed franchise.
Dhawan spent another five years at SRH, scoring season after season and building an excellent opening stand with David Warner. He also captained SRH in IPL 2014 and after an unsuccessful run, he handed over the duties to Darren Sammy.
At the end of 2018, Dhawan parted ways with Sunrisers and went ‘home’ from Delhi. One of the main problems Dhawan faced in the first 9-10 years of his IPL career has been his strike rate, especially after power plays.

DC coach Ricky Ponting also said this when he suggested that Dhawan should put in more effort for the 2019 season.
Dhawan had his best two years with the Delhi franchise and it ended in 2020 as he became the first cricketer in IPL history to break the streak of 106*(61) v RR and 101*(58) v CSK. In that season, Dhawan scored 618 runs @ 44.14/144.73 in 17 innings as Delhi reached the final for the first time.
Dhawan followed up with another decent season in 2021, scoring almost 600 runs (587 @ 39.13), albeit at a much lower strike rate. However, he and DC parted ways before the 2022 Mega Auction. There, he found a new home in the Punjab King, paying INR 8.25 million for his services.
Dhawan returned the faith with the bat, scoring 460 runs (38.33/122.67), becoming the first batsman to hit 700 fours in the process.

Dhawan recorded a whopping 701 fours (205 innings) in his IPL career. Next is Virat Kohli with 578 4s (215 innings).
In 2020, Dhawan wrote history when he smashed numerous breathless runs against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, becoming the leading batsman. Jos Buttler (2022) is the only batsman to match Dhawan’s feat.
